German Linux hardware vendor TUXEDO Computers has announced plans to rebuild its TUXEDO OS distribution on a Debian Testing foundation, moving away from the Ubuntu LTS base that has underpinned the platform. The move is understood to be driven by disagreements with Canonical over packaging direction, particularly the increasing integration of the Snap package system into Ubuntu. Debian Testing offers TUXEDO a middle ground: its rolling-release model provides more current packages, including core system components and hardware drivers, than Debian Stable—a practical requirement for supporting new hardware. At the same time, TUXEDO gains access to Debian's established package management infrastructure and community governance, which the vendor has indicated it views as a more reliable foundation.
The transition carries notable execution risks. TUXEDO's value proposition depends on its proprietary software stack, including the TUXEDO Control Center and specialized driver packages for features such as fingerprint readers and custom function keys. Porting and validating this software on a new base will require significant development effort.
The company has confirmed it will continue maintaining the current Ubuntu-based TUXEDO OS during the transition period, with the next major release expected on Debian Testing. TUXEDO has also committed to providing an upgrade path for existing users, though it has not yet specified whether this will involve an in-place upgrade or a fresh installation. Managing Debian Testing's periodic feature freezes before Stable releases may also introduce complexities into the company's development cycle.
