Attackers who obtained unauthorised access to seven ConnectWise application identities pivoted into customer Microsoft 365 tenants, prompting the US-based IT management software vendor to take three of its cloud services offline as a containment measure.

ConnectWise suspended its Cloud Backup service and pulled both SaaS Security and Cloud Management offline over the weekend after determining that unknown attackers had gained access to seven of its application identities, according to Security Affairs. Those identities — the machine-to-machine credentials that applications use to authenticate to cloud APIs — were then abused to target Microsoft 365 environments belonging to ConnectWise customers.

Do this first: a five-step checklist

The incident is a reminder that application credentials are a perimeter of their own. Defenders should prioritise, in order:

  1. Rotate application secrets and client secrets for all service principals and app registrations — including those issued to third-party integrations, backup agents, and RMM tooling.
  2. Extend conditional access to workload identities. In most Microsoft Entra ID deployments, conditional access policies apply only to human users; service principals sit outside them unless explicitly included.
  3. Audit app registrations and enterprise applications, then revoke any that are no longer required or whose owners cannot be identified.
  4. Review sign-in logs for non-human identities, looking for impossible-travel patterns, unfamiliar IP ranges, or permission grants that were never requested.
  5. Treat vendor-held credentials as privileged infrastructure: require your MSP and SaaS providers to state where and how they store your tenant's application secrets, and under whose control revocation sits.
Why application identities bypass the perimeter

The attack path here is the same class of exposure seen in recent Okta and Microsoft service-principal incidents. Passwords and multi-factor authentication protect human sign-ins; service principals and their associated secrets do not go through an MFA prompt. Once an attacker holds a valid application secret, every control that depends on "the user proved who they are" is effectively bypassed.

CISA and NIST zero-trust guidance has, for several years, pushed organisations to treat non-human identities with the same governance as human ones — least-privilege scoping, regular credential rotation, and continuous verification. Adoption has lagged, in large part because app registrations multiply quietly through integration projects and rarely appear in anyone's access-review inventory.

The MSP multiplier

ConnectWise's customer base is heavily weighted toward managed service providers, which concentrates the blast radius. A single upstream compromise at a vendor that many MSPs trust with tenant-level access can cascade across dozens or hundreds of downstream Microsoft 365 tenants simultaneously — a dynamic that has driven the sector's growing regulatory and insurance scrutiny.

For its part, ConnectWise has said little beyond confirming the identity compromise and the service suspensions. The initial access vector that let the attackers obtain the seven application identities has not been disclosed. Equally unclear is how many tenants were actually reached, whether any data was exfiltrated or merely accessed, and when the suspended services will be restored. ConnectWise has not, at time of publication, issued a primary disclosure resolving those questions.

The company is no stranger to this spotlight: in 2024 it disclosed zero-day vulnerabilities in ScreenConnect and its Authenticate authentication product that were exploited in the wild — incidents that pushed many MSP customers to re-examine the trust they place in remote management tooling.

Local lens: why this matters to Hong Kong MSPs

The following is general context, not a report on any specific Hong Kong organisation or regulator.

Hong Kong managed service providers and IT teams typically run Microsoft 365 as the default productivity and identity backbone, and many resell or wrap it with third-party backup, security, and management tools of the kind ConnectWise provides. For those environments, the operative question is not whether a downstream tenant is named in a vendor's disclosure, but whether anyone can currently enumerate every service principal holding access to the tenant — and who can revoke it. Firms that have never inventoried their enterprise applications will find that audit far harder in the aftermath of an incident than before one.

The takeaway

ConnectWise's own framing aside, the durable lesson is architectural: application identities are privileged infrastructure. They hold persistent, often high-privilege access to cloud tenants, they sit outside the human MFA perimeter, and — as this incident demonstrates — they can be stolen and reused without ever touching a password field. Organisations that govern them accordingly will fare better than those that treat them as plumbing.

This article will be updated if ConnectWise issues a fuller disclosure confirming tenant scope, accessed-versus-exfiltrated status, or restoration of the suspended services.
