Researchers at the University of Toronto's Citizen Lab have confirmed that a former Member of the European Parliament was repeatedly infected with NSO Group's Pegasus spyware while investigating the commercial surveillance tool's deployment.

The finding, documented in a new Citizen Lab report and covered by Security Affairs, highlights a recurring challenge in digital oversight: lawmakers tasked with scrutinizing spyware vendors have themselves become targets. According to the report, the former MEP was serving on a parliamentary committee examining the use of commercial surveillance technologies when the infections occurred.

Pegasus is a mobile intrusion platform developed by NSO Group, licensed to government agencies worldwide. The software has been the subject of repeated investigations by Citizen Lab and other research organizations, with documented use against journalists, activists, and political figures across multiple countries.

The report adds to ongoing scrutiny of the commercial spyware market within the European Union, where lawmakers have been debating stricter regulation and transparency requirements for the procurement and deployment of such surveillance capabilities.
