After a two-year hiatus, journalist and developer Jonathan Corbet has delivered an updated edition of his annual Kernel Report, this time at the Kernel Recipes conference. In the talk, Corbet surveyed what is happening in the kernel community, how it is dealing with a period of accelerated change, and where development may be heading. A recording of the presentation is available online.
Among the most prominent themes was the ongoing integration of the Rust programming language into the kernel. Corbet characterised Rust adoption as a strategic commitment rather than a passing experiment, driven by the language's inherent memory safety properties. The promise is to reduce classes of vulnerabilities that have long plagued kernel subsystems, particularly in drivers. At the same time, the report acknowledged the challenge this introduces: kernel maintainers now need fluency in both C and Rust, adding complexity to code review and long-term maintenance.
Corbet also outlined a shift in the kernel's security philosophy, moving from a reactive posture focused on patching toward architectural hardening. This involves proactively designing and fortifying subsystems, including legacy code, against an expanding attack surface driven by the kernel's deployment across an increasingly diverse range of hardware and platforms.
Two technical developments highlighted in the report underscore the community's drive for innovation alongside stability. The first is sched_ext, a mechanism that allows pluggable CPU scheduling policies to be loaded dynamically, giving administrators the ability to tailor scheduling behaviour to specific workload characteristics without rebuilding the kernel. The second is the maturation of Bcachefs, a modern copy-on-write filesystem that now offers a feature set competitive with established options such as Btrfs and XFS, including built-in compression, snapshots, and scalability for storage-heavy use cases.
Beyond the technical, Corbet emphasised that community health itself constitutes critical infrastructure. As the codebase grows more complex — including through multi-language support — the report stressed the importance of governance, coordination, and mentorship in sustaining the project's long-term viability.
The Kernel Report 2026 offers a clear signal to infrastructure teams: the kernel community is deliberately accelerating the pace of foundational change in areas such as language choice, security architecture, and storage technology. For those tasked with maintaining Linux systems, the report suggests that keeping pace with these developments is no longer optional but a practical necessity for secure and resilient operations.
