Linux support for Qualcomm's Snapdragon X laptops is set to gain a meaningful display upgrade: static HDR support is being added to the MSM DRM kernel driver, covering both DisplayPort outputs and embedded DisplayPort (eDP) panels — the latter being what laptop screens themselves use.
The change lands in the MSM DRM driver, which handles graphics display output across Qualcomm's Arm-based platforms. For anyone running Linux on a Snapdragon X machine, eDP coverage is the part that matters most: it means the laptop's built-in panel, not just external monitors, is in scope.
Why it's a milestone, not a finished feature
The Linux-on-Arm laptop story has, until now, largely been one of tinkering. Snapdragon X hardware is genuinely attractive — strong performance per watt, fanless-friendly thermals, and all-day battery life — but the software stack has lagged behind the silicon. Display quality is one of the more visible gaps, and HDR is squarely in that category.
It is worth being precise about what this change does and does not deliver.
It is static HDR only. There is no indication of dynamic, per-frame tone-mapped HDR — the kind used by HDR10+ or Dolby Vision content pipelines. Static HDR means a fixed transfer function and mastering metadata: enough for a properly calibrated still-image or video workflow, but not for interactive HDR gaming or runtime tone mapping.
The kernel driver is a prerequisite, not the solution. HDR in Linux is a full-stack problem. The kernel must advertise HDR capabilities and hand the compositor the right metadata, but userspace still has to do the work. Users will need a Wayland compositor with HDR support — recent KWin and wlroots-based compositors, for example — before any of this is visible on screen. A kernel that supports HDR with a compositor that ignores it delivers nothing.
The kernel-side change is also expected to arrive in a future upstream kernel release rather than appearing immediately in installed systems. That timing matters for anyone planning a purchase.
What this means if you are buying a Snapdragon X laptop in Hong Kong
For professionals here weighing a Snapdragon X machine as a primary work device, the practical guidance is straightforward: judge a laptop by the software stack it will actually run, not the silicon it ships with.
- Check the kernel. Distributions tracking recent mainline kernels will pick this up first. Older LTS kernels that enterprise-oriented distros favour will lag, potentially by several release cycles.
- Check the compositor. HDR support in the desktop environment is the other half of the equation, and it is evolving independently of kernel work.
- Treat HDR as a bonus, not a baseline. Colour-critical work on these machines remains viable with properly calibrated SDR panels; the incoming HDR support closes a gap rather than opening a new category of work.
Snapdragon X laptops have been commercially available since 2024, and distributions including Fedora and Ubuntu have been shipping increasingly capable support for the platform. Each incremental kernel merge makes the proposition more credible for professional use.
The MSM driver's static HDR work is a small piece of a much larger puzzle — but it is a piece the display stack has been missing. Combined with the steady maturation of the wider Arm Linux ecosystem, it moves Snapdragon X hardware one step closer to being something a working professional can deploy without a caveat attached to every recommendation.
