The credential-theft campaign tracked as GhostAction expanded sharply on 8 and 9 October 2026, hitting more than 30,000 GitHub repositories across roughly 3,000 users and organisations, according to an analysis by GitGuardian reported by The Hacker News on 15 October.

The surge was driven by the compromise of about 1,900 GitHub accounts, with the attackers attempting to extract 3,174 secrets from the CI environments of public repositories, GitGuardian researcher Gaetan and colleagues said.

No platform vulnerability appears to have been involved. GitGuardian said it found no evidence that GhostAction exploited a flaw in GitHub itself; the campaign relied entirely on valid — but unauthorised — credentials. In practice, that means there is no patch to wait for. The exposure is one of operational hygiene, not software defects.

The scale of the 48-hour spike points to automation rather than hands-on intrusion. Harvesting programmatic credentials — personal access tokens (PATs), deploy keys and CI tokens — at that volume suggests internet-scale scanning of public repositories and CI logs, likely including long-unrotated secrets first leaked some time ago.

Why the pattern matters for development teams

The observation below is editorial rather than a claim by GitGuardian about specific affected organisations, but the pattern has particular relevance for teams that routinely publish repositories — open-source contributions, side projects, client demos — alongside internal tooling. Where CI configuration is committed alongside the code, and where tokens, API keys or cloud credentials are left in workflow files or build logs, the door is effectively open to automated scanners of this kind. That is precisely the door GhostAction appears to be looking for.

A six-item remediation checklist

Inventory and rotate every PAT, deploy key and repository-scoped credential. Revoke broadly rather than case by case, then reissue with an expiry set — many teams treat 90 days or shorter as a reasonable default.

Enable GitHub secret scanning and push protection so exposed credentials are blocked at push time rather than discovered after the fact.

Migrate CI workloads to OIDC federation, exchanging long-lived static keys for short-lived, cloud-issued credentials. GitHub Actions and all major cloud providers support this; the migration cost is typically lower than expected.

Scope tokens to least privilege. Deployment tokens should be limited to specific repositories and, where read access suffices, never write-all. The same principle applies to CI tokens.

Audit access and administrative rights, including OAuth app authorisations that may no longer have an active owner or use.

Pin third-party GitHub Actions to a commit SHA rather than a mutable tag or branch — a low-cost mitigation against an increasingly common CI supply-chain vector.

GitGuardian said its analysis is ongoing and may publish additional detail on attack infrastructure or full victim scope. Until then, the practical conclusion for development teams is straightforward: what is needed is not a security advisory to wait for, but a checklist to work through now.
