Researchers have detailed an advanced persistent threat (APT) spear-phishing campaign that uses forged Google Calendar event invitations to push individuals affiliated with Taiwan research organisations into an adversary-in-the-middle (AitM) phishing framework, where their Google account credentials and multi-factor authentication (MFA) codes are captured in real time.
The activity, tracked as UAT-11985, was reported by The Hacker News, and the mechanics matter far beyond the immediate victims. The campaign is a textbook demonstration that the credential-plus-MFA model — long the default assumption for cloud identity security — no longer holds against a capable attacker.
How the lure works
The entry point is deliberately mundane: a calendar invitation. Unsolicited event invites are routine and high-volume in collaborative research environments, where conference organisers, partner institutions, and ad-hoc working groups routinely reach out to people they have never corresponded with before. That volume is precisely what makes the vector effective — authenticated, high-trust Google Workspace notifications slip past both user suspicion and the mail-security controls that would flag an unexpected attachment or link. Once the target engages, they are routed to an AitM phishing proxy sitting between the victim and the legitimate Google sign-in page.
This is the part that should concern every identity and security administrator. In an AitM relay, the phishing site is not a crude replica — it is a live pass-through to the real Google authentication flow. The victim types their password into what is functionally the real service, completes their MFA challenge normally, and the framework transparently relays every step. When authentication completes, the attacker inherits the resulting session cookie.
The consequence is blunt: SMS one-time codes, TOTP authenticator apps, and push approvals all fail transparently. They were never designed to bind the authentication to the legitimate origin — they simply prove that someone holding the second factor approved a sign-in. An AitM attacker satisfies that check on the victim's behalf and then resumes the session from their own infrastructure, often with full access to mail, Drive, and connected applications.
Why MFA alone no longer holds
For Hong Kong IT teams running Google Workspace or similar SaaS identity stacks, the uncomfortable lesson is that "we enforce MFA" is not a meaningful phishing control. Session cookie theft means the attacker never needs to defeat the second factor — they simply reuse it. This campaign targeting research affiliates shows the pattern is not theoretical; it is being operationalised by APT-level actors against exactly the kind of staff — researchers, academics, collaborators — who receive high volumes of unsolicited calendar invitations.
The strongest defence is shifting authentication to origin-bound, phishing-resistant factors — passkeys and FIDO2 hardware security keys. These cryptographically bind the authentication to the verified domain, so an AitM proxy relays nothing of value: the browser refuses to release the assertion to a look-alike origin. TOTP and push should be treated as fallback, not baseline.
What defenders should do now
Because open-source AitM tooling is readily available, defenders can — and should — stand up their own instance against a test tenant to empirically verify that TOTP and push MFA fall over while passkeys and FIDO2 do not. It is the fastest way to prove the gap to leadership, and testing strictly against your own tenant is a legitimate red-team exercise, not an offensive capability.
For teams outside an all-Google shop, the excuse that passkey support is immature no longer holds. Passkey support across Linux desktops via libfido2 and platform authenticators has matured considerably, and self-hosted stacks such as Nextcloud and Matrix now interoperate with FIDO2 credentials. Defer phishing-resistant auth at your peril, regardless of platform.
Configuration-level defence checklist
- Enable passkeys/FIDO2 for Workspace admins first, then roll out to all users; remove SMS as an MFA option where possible.
- Enforce device-level trust: context-aware access and managed-device policies that reject stolen cookies replayed from unknown devices.
- Shorten session lifetimes, and enable cookie or token binding where the platform supports it, to raise the replay cost for stolen tokens.
- Revoke active sessions tenant-wide immediately after any suspected AitM exposure, and rotate connected application tokens — revoking the password alone is insufficient.
- Hunt for post-compromise indicators: impossible-travel sign-in alerts, authentication from unfamiliar ASNs, new device enrolments, and unexpected mailbox forwarding rules all survive cookie theft even when the login itself looks legitimate.
- Verify calendar invites out-of-band; treat unexpected meeting invitations with external senders as a phishing indicator, and alert on the invite-driven sign-in pattern.
- Run phishing simulations against research and collaboration staff, who are precisely the profile UAT-11985 is targeting.
The broader point is that this campaign is a preview, not an outlier. As AitM tooling commoditises, origin-bound authentication becomes the only credential model that survives contact with a determined adversary.
