ConnectWise Cloud Backup Goes Dark After Attackers Hijack Service Identities in M365 Tenants
ConnectWise said on Saturday that it has disabled seven of its application identities after threat actors obtained unauthorized access to them and used that access to compromise Microsoft 365 tenants. The same day, the company suspended its Cloud Backup service, saying it will stay offline until the investigation concludes.
ConnectWise has not said how the attackers first got in, how many tenants were affected, or whether data was exfiltrated versus merely accessed. It has named no threat actor and given no timeline for Cloud Backup returning to service.
Of the seven identities, ConnectWise has so far published a full GUID for only one — Cloud Backup itself:
ConnectWise Cloud Backup - 506e08f9-6e9a-4da4-942b-a099a03644ae
This list is not the full seven. Until ConnectWise publishes the remaining identifiers and any associated indicators of compromise, the absence of an application from this list is not evidence that it is clean. Administrators should track the company's official advisories rather than treating the single published GUID as a complete search set.
Why this incident has nothing to do with passwords
The real lesson here is the nature of the compromised identities themselves. Service principals, app registrations, and OAuth grants live at the tenant level. They are not protected by multi-factor authentication and they do not generally trip the user-centric anomaly alerts that most security teams watch. Once a vendor's machine identity is taken over, the attacker operates as software, not as a person — and a single compromised vendor identity can propagate across every downstream tenant that MSP manages, without ever touching a user's password.
ConnectWise's decision to disable all seven identities at once suggests it assessed its exposure as broad. The posture is clearly "stop the bleeding first, recover later."
An M365 audit checklist for MSPs and IT managers
These steps apply to any organization running Microsoft 365 that has authorized third-party applications:
- Inventory every application grant. In Entra ID, enumerate your service principals and both their delegated and application permissions. The obvious first command is:
powershell
Get-MgOauth2PermissionGrant -All
but note the trap: that cmdlet surfaces delegated permissions only. Applications holding application permissions — the more dangerous class, and exactly where backups and data-access tools sit — are invisible to it. You must also run:
powershell
Get-MgServicePrincipal -All | ForEach-Object {
Get-MgServicePrincipalAppRoleAssignment -ServicePrincipalId $_.Id -All
}
and inspect the resulting AppRoleAssignments. Skipping this step produces a false all-clear on large tenants, and paging without -All will silently truncate the results on any tenant with more than 100 objects.
-
Cross-check the known ConnectWise identifiers. Match the GUID above — and every additional identifier ConnectWise publishes — against your tenant inventory.
-
Review admin-consent records. Isolate every application that was granted high-privilege permissions via tenant-wide admin consent, and judge whether that consent still makes sense today.
-
Revoke unnecessary grants. Any OAuth authorization that is unrecognized, unused, or visibly over-scoped should be withdrawn immediately.
-
Examine conditional access and application policies. Backup-class applications such as Cloud Backup should authenticate through dedicated service accounts, never shared or interactive logins.
-
Enforce least privilege with a real consent workflow. New high-privilege consent should go through approval, not a single administrator clicking through alone.
The operational clock: two risks that start now
Suspending Cloud Backup opens an immediate backup-coverage gap — data changes made during the outage may never be copied anywhere. Hong Kong IT teams using the product should assess, today:
- Whether critical data is still changing during the suspension. If so, coverage needs to be backfilled through another mechanism, whether native M365 tooling such as eDiscovery or an independent backup provider.
- Every restore point from this service should be treated as unverified. If attackers reached the backup repository, the backups themselves may be tampered with. Validate integrity against known-good copies before any production restore.
- The possibility that a single restore will not be sufficient. Until ConnectWise publishes root cause and scope, teams should plan for multi-point restores and offline retention rather than assume a clean recovery.
Five questions every SME should put to its MSP
- Which third-party application identities exist in our tenant right now? Can you give us the full list?
- What permissions do those applications hold — delegated or application-level?
- How are OAuth grants to your M365 management tooling approved and periodically reviewed?
- If one of your products is compromised, when exactly do we hear about it, and through what channel?
- If your service goes down, where does our backup coverage gap open, and how do we verify your restore points are trustworthy?
ConnectWise has yet to publish the complete identity list, its root cause, or affected-tenant figures. We will keep watching the company's official channels and update this article as those details land.
ConnectWise Cloud Backup - 506e08f9-6e9a-4da4-942b-a099a03644ae
powershell
Get-MgOauth2PermissionGrant -All
powershell
Get-MgServicePrincipal -All | ForEach-Object {
Get-MgServicePrincipalAppRoleAssignment -ServicePrincipalId $_.Id -All
}
