Canonical's Multipass — the lightweight VM orchestrator known for spinning up Ubuntu instances with a single command across Windows, macOS and Linux — gained a significant new capability with the 1.17 release in mid-2025. As Phoronix reported on 2 July 2025, that version added direct support for launching non-Ubuntu Linux distributions, extending the tool beyond its original Ubuntu-only scope.

For backend and DevOps engineers in Hong Kong juggling multi-distro test matrices, the change removes a familiar pain point. Before 1.17, validating a service against Debian, Fedora or an Alpine-based image typically meant maintaining a second toolchain — Vagrant, Lima, or a hand-rolled libvirt setup. Multipass's appeal was its friction-free, cloud-init-driven workflow; extending that workflow to other distributions eliminated the main reason teams kept parallel tooling around.

What 1.17 Changed

The core capability is straightforward: multipass can now provision VMs from images of Linux distributions other than Ubuntu, drawn from the tool's existing image catalogue. Importantly, the change is additive. Existing Ubuntu-based workflows, launch profiles and cloud-init user-data continue to behave as before, so teams with production pipelines built on Multipass should not need to rework them.

Two practical caveats apply. First, Canonical has not published an exhaustive catalogue of every third-party distribution; the reliable starting point is running multipass find against your installed version to see what your platform actually offers. Second, performance characteristics vary by hypervisor — Multipass on Windows can route through either Hyper-V or WSL2 depending on configuration, and cross-distro guests may not behave identically under each. Benchmark before committing a CI pipeline to it.

How It Compares

Multipass now sits alongside several established options for throwaway VMs:

Tool Cross-distro images Typical strength Trade-off
Multipass Broadened in 1.17 One-command launch, cloud-init native, cross-platform Smaller third-party image ecosystem than Vagrant
Vagrant Extensive (Vagrant Cloud) Large box catalogue, mature provider ecosystem Heavier setup, slower iteration for quick tests
Lima Growing Excellent macOS/Apple Silicon experience Limited to macOS/Linux hosts
OrbStack Via containers/VMs Fast, macOS-optimised, developer-friendly macOS-only, closed-source

The deciding factor for most teams will be image quality and refresh cadence. Vagrant's long-established box catalogue is its primary moat; if Canonical maintains timely, trustworthy non-Ubuntu images, Multipass's simpler developer experience becomes a credible reason to consolidate tooling.

CLI Quick Start

For Hong Kong DevOps engineers evaluating the workflow, a basic Multipass session looks like this:

# List available images (including the non-Ubuntu distributions added in 1.17)
multipass find

# Launch a VM
multipass launch --name dev-vm

# Enter the VM's shell
multipass shell dev-vm

# List running VMs and their IPs
multipass list

# Copy a file from the host into the VM
multipass transfer ./app.tar.gz dev-vm:/tmp/

# Stop / delete the VM
multipass stop dev-vm
multipass delete dev-vm
multipass purge

Note that the transfer example targets /tmp/ rather than /home/ubuntu/ — the latter path exists only in Ubuntu images and will fail on the first non-Ubuntu guest you try. To run commands inside a non-Ubuntu guest or to provision users and directories, use multipass exec dev-vm -- <command> or pass a cloud-init config at launch time with --cloud-init.

Since the third-party image list in 1.17 is still expanding, confirm that your target distribution appears in multipass find before committing a test pipeline to it.

Availability

Multipass 1.17 is distributed through Canonical's official channels: as a Snap package on Linux, and via the project's installer downloads for Windows and macOS. For teams standardising on Ubuntu for development but needing to validate deployments against other distributions, the release closes a gap that previously required a second VM toolchain.

Lima 持續增長 macOS/Apple Silicon 體驗出色 僅限 macOS/Linux 主機

multipass find

multipass launch --name dev-vm

# 進入 VM 的 shell
multipass shell dev-vm

multipass list

multipass transfer ./app.tar.gz dev-vm:/tmp/

multipass stop dev-vm
multipass delete dev-vm
multipass purge
