Eight eMudhra Intermediate CA Keys Reported Compromised, Prompting Mozilla Action
Mozilla says it has received a report that private keys associated with eight eMudhra intermediate certificates have been compromised, and the affected certificates have already been blocked through OneCRL while Firefox's network security services stack has been updated to NSS 3.131.1. Chrome has blocked them since 17 October, with Apple following on 19 October and Microsoft on 20 October.
Mozilla's announcement describes the exposure in direct terms: the keys "could allow attackers to issue fraudulent HTTPS certificates for websites they do not control." While the intermediates remain trusted anywhere, that capability is functionally indistinguishable from control of a CA itself — an attacker can sign leaf certificates for any hostname, and browsers will treat them as legitimate.
What is publicly known
The disclosure rests on Mozilla's announcement and the underlying report it links to, with LWN.net covering the story in turn. Mozilla has also published a dedicated single-page site with a status table for the affected certificates; operators who need serial numbers, fingerprints and per-browser status should consult those primary sources directly rather than rely on secondary summaries.
Not every platform has published matching detail. NetBSD, for example, has issued its own guidance, and administrators running other stacks should check their vendor's advisories rather than assume Firefox's timeline applies.
Why this matters to operators
An intermediate CA sits between a widely trusted root and the leaf certificates served by individual websites. If an intermediate's private key leaks, the attacker can sign new certificates for bank portals, internal SSO endpoints or partner APIs until the intermediate is distrusted everywhere. This is the failure mode seen with DigiNotar in 2011, whose collapse after a rogue certificate incident reshaped how root programmes handle CA compromises.
The practical difference for site operators: your own certificate may be perfectly well-issued and still become untrusted if it chains through a distrusted intermediate.
Verification checklist
- Map your chain. Run
openssl s_client -connect your.domain:443 -showcerts(or use your load balancer's certificate inspection) and record the issuer of each intermediate on the path to a trusted root. - Identify affected leaves. If any issuer is eMudhra, query Certificate Transparency logs — crt.sh searches by issuer name — to enumerate leaf certificates chaining through the suspect intermediates, including ones on forgotten hosts.
- Check for cross-signatures. A leaf may have an alternative path to a different root; verify whether an unaffected chain exists before planning reissuance.
- Plan reissuance. Request replacements from eMudhra or migrate to a different CA, staged so deployment is a single change window.
- Re-validate after the change. Confirm the new chain in Firefox and Chrome, then re-run the CT query to ensure no stragglers remain.
What happens next
The incident is a reminder that enterprise certificate inventories — often assembled from CT data rather than internal records — are a prerequisite for incident response. Organisations that cannot answer "which of our hosts chains through this issuer?" within minutes will find the current distrust window uncomfortable, regardless of which root programme acts first. Further platform statements and any revised status table entries will be worth watching as the disclosure develops.
openssl s_client -connect your.domain:443 -showcerts(或使用 load balancer 的憑證檢查功能),記錄通往受信任 root 之路上每個中間憑證的簽發者(issuer)。
