PHP Flags Second Unpatched Remote Code Execution Flaw Days After Emergency Release

The PHP project has disclosed a second remote code execution vulnerability in three days, and unlike the first, no code fix is planned for it.

The flaw, tracked as CVE-2026-115560, was reported on 23 October, two days after PHP shipped emergency patches for the critical PHP2Shell flaws. PHP says the issue affects only web applications configured in an unusual way and characterises the likelihood of exploitation as unlikely. The project is not issuing an emergency fix. Instead, it recommends that administrators disable a specific feature identified in the project's advisory — a configuration change rather than a code update. PHP has reported no known exploitation of the issue, and the full scope of the guidance sits in the primary PHP advisory.

What administrators should do now:

  • Read the primary PHP advisory and locate the specific feature PHP recommends disabling. Confirm the exact setting name against the advisory itself before changing anything in production.
  • Review the PHP configuration across all hosts, including staging, secondary, and legacy boxes that rarely appear in patch inventories. The unusual-configuration condition means the flaw may exist on exactly the machines nobody is watching.
  • Verify the PHP2Shell patches have actually landed everywhere — a version check on production alone will miss standby and development environments.
  • Document an explicit accept-or-disable decision for CVE-2026-115560: either the feature is off and the reason is recorded, or the residual risk is accepted by name, with an owner.

Within roughly 48 hours, PHP administrators have received two advisories requiring two different kinds of remediation: the PHP2Shell flaws were resolved by upgrading the runtime, while CVE-2026-115560 is resolved by auditing configuration. Patching the runtime does not disable the feature PHP is asking operators to switch off. PHP has not published a formal patch timeline or a no-fix rationale beyond the unusual-configuration condition, so disabling the recommended feature remains the operative guidance in the meantime.

For Hong Kong teams, the advisory applies wherever older PHP deployments persist — long-tail web hosts, legacy internal tools, and third-party applications on managed shared hosting, where configuration settings drift outside routine patch reviews.

The risk described by PHP is conditional on an atypical setup, and the project has claimed neither active exploitation nor broad exposure. The remedy, however, is a configuration change that can be applied without waiting on a release cycle.
