539 Patches, 76% Reviewed: What Linux 7.4's Memory Management Pull Request Means for Operators
Andrew Morton has submitted the mainline memory management (MM) pull request for the Linux 7.4 merge window. Per Phoronix's report on the pull, the batch tops out at 539 patches as submitted, with a reviewed rate of 76% — a notably high proportion of the stack having passed through review before landing. (The 76% figure is as reported by Phoronix at the opening of the merge window; we were unable to independently re-verify it against a rendered load of the source page at time of publication, and it should be treated alongside the patch count as subject to shift before 7.4 is final.)
The MM tree is one of the most consequential parts of any merge window. It governs how the kernel allocates, reclaims and compacts memory, and changes there ripple into every workload running on the host — from database pages pinned in RAM to the ballooning and balancing behaviour that container and virtualisation platforms depend on.
What's in the batch
This cycle's headline contents are further DAMON work. DAMON (Data Access MONitor) is the kernel's framework for observing data access patterns at scale: it tracks which memory regions are hot, cold or idle with comparatively low overhead, and exposes that signal to both operators and kernel heuristics such as reclaim and tiering. Phoronix characterises this cycle's additions as "more DAMON" alongside a set of performance optimisations — meaning the observability surface operators can hook into is growing, not shrinking.
The reclaim and compaction improvements matter most for memory-dense hosts. Anywhere a machine runs many tenants — a dense container or virtualisation host, a virtual machine fleet, a build farm — the kernel spends real CPU cycles deciding what to evict and how to coalesce free pages into usable blocks. Gains in those paths show up directly as fewer stalls under memory pressure and steadier tail latencies when the box is pushed close to its limits.
The 76% reviewed rate is worth particular attention. Merge-window patches frequently arrive with large fractions unreviewed, which is how regressions get discovered downstream rather than upstream. A three-quarters-reviewed batch suggests the MM tree is entering 7.4 in comparatively disciplined shape — though, as always, review coverage is not the same as production soak time.
What to watch next
Three caveats should temper any early conclusions.
First, merge-window numbers shift. The 539-patch figure describes the MM pull as submitted at the start of the window; later trees, fixes and follow-up pulls can move the totals before 7.4 is declared final. Treat 539 as the intake number, not the shipping one — and treat the 76% review rate as Phoronix's merge-window reading, worth reconfirming against the settled tree.
Second, no benchmarks yet. Merge-window reporting is about what changed, not how fast it runs. Expect performance follow-ups — particularly on reclaim and compaction workloads — only once reviewers and testers have the released kernel in hand, and defer any performance claims until those numbers exist.
Third, DAMON's practical value depends on downstream tooling. The kernel supplying a monitoring subsystem does not by itself produce dashboards, alerts or safe policy defaults; distributions and observability stacks need to package and expose it before most teams can use it day to day.
When you'll actually see it
Mainline availability is the easy part: 7.4's final release follows the close of the merge window and testing cycle, and from there the tree is available to anyone building their own kernel.
The conservative path is different. Ubuntu LTS and RHEL-class distributions track a given upstream feature only when it has accumulated enough upstream stability to be backported into their maintained kernel branches — a process that typically unfolds over subsequent kernel releases rather than the release the feature first appeared in. In practice, teams on enterprise distributions should plan for these MM changes to arrive through a later distro kernel update, not an immediate upgrade, and should treat any interim performance claims as provisional until their own workloads are measured.
For operators, the sensible near-term action is unglamorous: note which of these changes touch the reclaim, compaction and DAMON paths you actually depend on, then revisit once the feature lands in the kernel your distribution releases.
