An unknown threat actor has compromised 953 online stores — the majority running Magento — in a campaign active since July 2025, according to Dutch e-commerce security company Sansec, as reported by The Hacker News on 26 October.

The headline number is striking, but the more significant detail is the technique. Rather than planting a conventional backdoor file, the attackers tuck a small fragment of code into Magento's own CMS blocks — legitimate content objects that store operators routinely edit and publish. When a shopper loads a page, that fragment dispatches a JavaScript loader, which then fetches the malicious payload on demand and serves it only to real browsers arriving from the store's own origin.

That design is the point of the campaign. A point-in-time scanner crawling the site retrieves a clean page, because the payload is fetched dynamically at browsing time rather than sitting in a static file. Defenders who assume malicious scripts must originate from an external domain are similarly misled: the request appears to come from the store itself. And because persistence lives in database-backed CMS content rather than on disk, traditional file-integrity checks have little or nothing to flag — a footprint that appears to reduce the artifacts available to a routine forensic sweep.

Sansec did not attribute the activity to any named group. The report offers no actor-identity indicators and names no organisation behind the campaign.

The scale and duration of the operation — 953 stores over roughly fifteen months — appear more consistent with an automated compromise process than with hand-picked targets. The report does not explicitly claim the technique was refined over that period; whatever refinement happened, if any, remains unconfirmed.

For operators of self-hosted Magento and comparable PHP storefronts in Hong Kong and the region — many of which manage content through the same CMS block mechanism — this is a general observation about shared technology, not a claim of any local incident.

How to self-check: a practical checklist
  • Patch the core and extensions first. Known Magento and third-party flaws remain the most common way in.
  • Restrict admin credentials. Enforce MFA, rotate passwords, and review which accounts can edit CMS blocks and templates.
  • Integrity-monitor the CMS layer. Extend file-integrity monitoring beyond the filesystem to CMS blocks, template variables, and stored page content — the layer this campaign abuses.
  • Watch outbound browser requests. Continuously observe which scripts load and where browsers send data during a real session; periodic HTML or vulnerability scans will miss payloads served on demand.

The defensive lesson is that persistence has moved into the data layer, where a legitimate content object becomes an executable surface served from the store's own trusted origin. The line where "trusted" ends and "injected" begins is now drawn inside the CMS itself — and only continuous, browser-level observation of what actually loads and where it goes will reliably spot it.
