Fake login pages predate the modern identity stack, but The Hacker News reported on 27 October that generative AI has repriced the old attack: clones are now cheaper to assemble, harder to spot, and — for many operators for the first time — routinely tailored to a single target. The story is not a new attack class. It is a collapse in the cost of making an old one believable.
From hand-copied markup to on-demand clones
Attackers are using AI to reproduce familiar login screens at high visual fidelity, impersonate trusted brands credibly, and shape lures around specific employees and organisations. A page that once demanded a competent developer painstakingly copying a brand's markup can increasingly be generated on demand, with the phrasing of the accompanying email adapted to the recipient. Personalisation — historically the expensive, manual portion of phishing — has become the cheap part, and the per-target cost of a bespoke, convincing phish has fallen with it.
One page type, three outcomes
Not all of these pages stop at credential harvesting, and the distinction matters because each failure mode demands a different control. Conflating them produces mismatched defences:
- Password capture is addressed by credential hygiene, phishing-resistant authentication, and rapid reset on suspected exposure.
- Real-time MFA capture typically signals an adversary-in-the-middle setup, where the victim authenticates to a relay that forwards credentials and codes to the genuine service in the same moment. Time-based one-time codes alone do not stop this — and TOTP remains the default in many self-hosted and open-source identity stacks, so the gap is not confined to enterprises weighing passkey rollouts.
- Session hijacking targets the authenticated cookie or token rather than the secret used to obtain it, meaning the attacker needs neither a password nor a code.
Causation deserves precision: AiTM relay tooling and session-cookie theft predate the current wave of generative AI by several years. What is genuinely new is not a novel MFA bypass, but the fidelity, personalisation and throughput with which convincing lures can now be produced. The security implication is a repricing of per-target deception, not a break in the underlying defences.
Four actions for defenders
- Move toward phishing-resistant authentication. Passkeys and FIDO2/WebAuthn credentials bind authentication to the origin, so a lookalike domain cannot elicit a usable assertion. They neutralise the core premise of a cloned login page cryptographically, rather than adding another layer for attackers to strip.
- Harden sessions. Shorten lifetimes, bind sessions to device or IP characteristics where feasible, monitor for impossible-travel and anomalous concurrent sessions, and make session revocation — not just password reset — a distinct step in the incident response runbook.
- Match takedown tempo to generation tempo. AI-generated pages can be spun up quickly, so detection and takedown cycles for lookalike domains and brand impersonation must keep pace.
- Train for specificity. Generic awareness training modules do little against lures personalised to an employee's role, tools and internal terminology. Simulations should mirror the tailored approach described in the source.
The wider relevance is not limited to any single market: phishing generated at this speed and quality is a borderless problem, and organisations anywhere in APAC running cloud identity estates face the same mechanics. The fake login page is not a new attack, but the effort required to make a believable one has dropped sharply — and defences that assume a phishing page will look sloppy are on increasingly thin ice.
