CISA Flags Brotli and Adobe Commerce Flaws as Actively Exploited
The U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) has added vulnerabilities in Google's Brotli compression library and in Adobe Commerce and Magento to its Known Exploited Vulnerabilities (KEV) catalog, according to Security Affairs. The additions are not a severity judgment — they are a statement that attackers are actively using these flaws in the wild, and for U.S. federal agencies they carry a binding remediation clock.
What KEV actually means
KEV is an operational shortlist, not a ratings table. Inclusion is driven by evidence of observed exploitation rather than a CVSS score, which lets defenders skip the familiar argument about whether a theoretical severity justifies interrupting a release cycle. Under Binding Operational Directive 22-01 (BOD 22-01), federal civilian agencies must remediate listed vulnerabilities within 21 days of CISA publishing the entry — currently the standard window.
Outside the U.S. federal perimeter, that deadline binds no one else: teams elsewhere, including those running infrastructure in Hong Kong, are not bound by it. For them, the catalog's value lies elsewhere — it is one of the most reliable public indicators that a flaw has moved from proof-of-concept to real-world use. It is threat intelligence with a timestamp, not a compliance obligation.
The Brotli angle: an inventory problem
Brotli is a data-compression algorithm standardized as RFC 7932 and developed at Google. It now sits in place of or alongside gzip across browsers, web servers, content delivery networks, and container tooling — which is precisely what makes the KEV entry awkward to act on.
Brotli is rarely deployed as a deliberately chosen, centrally tracked component. It most often arrives as a transitive or vendored dependency inside a framework, a build image, or an edge appliance. Standard asset inventories and version-checking scripts will not surface it. Remediation is therefore a dependency-hunting exercise: trace which applications and infrastructure bundles carry the library, apply vendor fixes through the channels that ship them, and record the result. For DevOps teams, this is a reminder that "we patched everything on the list" and "we know what's running" are two different claims.
The Adobe Commerce angle: visible and web-facing
The Adobe Commerce and Magento entries point at the opposite kind of risk: conspicuous, internet-reachable, and sitting directly on the payment path. Storefronts process cardholder data, expose admin panels to the public internet, and have been a durable target of card-skimming campaigns for years.
Prioritization here should start with internet-facing stores, followed by applying vendor fixes as they become published. Patching alone is not the whole job: once a storefront has been compromised, injected skimmer code in checkout templates can outlive the original intrusion. Template and theme auditing belongs alongside the patch, not after it.
Why it matters beyond the catalog
The two additions pair a hard-to-see risk with an easy-to-see one. An embedded compression library teams did not know they shipped, and a payment-facing system they know is exposed, both landed on the same list because both are being exploited.
Treat a KEV entry as a deadline, even where no regulator imposes one: verify fixes against each entry's published remediation date, confirm the fix is actually deployed rather than merely available, and — where the catalog does not specify scanning coverage — check your own tooling independently rather than assuming presence. KEV is a lagging indicator by design; by the time an entry appears, the exploitation window has already opened.

Brotli
Adobe Commerce
