A trojanised extension impersonating Anthropic's Claude Code was distributed through Cursor's own extension marketplace for roughly 11 hours on 29 October, in a supply-chain incident that may have exposed as many as 5,000 developers to malware engineered to install persistent SSH backdoors on their workstations, according to BleepingComputer, which reported the incident on 30 October.
The extension was not shipped by Anthropic. It was a rogue listing that borrowed Claude Code's name and branding to claim trust it had not earned — a distinction that matters for both remediation and accountability. Neither Anthropic's official VS Code extension nor Cursor itself distributed the payload; the danger came from the combination of a familiar product name appearing inside a marketplace that many developers implicitly treat as vetted.
What happened
The malicious build sat in Cursor's marketplace for approximately 11 hours before being pulled. Exposure is estimated at up to 5,000 developers — a ceiling on possible reach rather than a confirmed count of infected machines. The listing has since been removed; the source report does not specify whether Cursor, Anthropic, or both carried out the takedown.
The payload
Once installed, the extension dropped malware that established persistent SSH access to the affected machine. A durable SSH foothold is not a throwaway compromise: on a developer workstation it is a bridge into source repositories, CI/CD runners, container registries and cloud consoles, wherever the same keys or agent sessions reach. Blast radius on a dev endpoint is effectively the blast radius of everything that endpoint can authenticate to.
Checking whether you were affected
Generic advice — "keep tools updated" — does not tell a developer whether they were hit. The actionable step is an indicator check against BleepingComputer's technical write-up, which carries the technical detail accompanying the story. In parallel, teams can run a short audit:
- Inspect
~/.ssh/for unexpected entries: unfamiliar files inauthorized_keys, new key pairs, or modifications toconfigandknown_hosts. - Review the contents of
authorized_keysagainst a known-good baseline; look for keys without comments or with anomalous options such ascommand=orpermitopenforwards. - List installed extensions in Cursor and compare publisher and version against the official Claude Code listing; remove anything that does not match.
- Check for unfamiliar outbound SSH traffic and long-lived connections to unknown hosts in shell history and endpoint logs.
- Rotate SSH keys and review active sessions on any machine where an indicator matches.
Why this matters beyond one incident
Extension marketplaces are a distinct trust boundary. Cursor draws from its own marketplace rather than the official VS Code Marketplace, so familiar names, familiar iconography and familiar publishers do not carry the guarantees developers have learned to associate with them. Anyone auditing an AI-assisted development toolchain should treat every marketplace — including first-party ones — as an untrusted distribution channel requiring publisher verification, version pinning and, ideally, an allowlist of approved extensions.
For teams in Hong Kong running AI coding assistants alongside corporate SSH and CI infrastructure, the checklist above applies directly: the relevant question is not whether a tool is popular, but whether the copy on your machine came from the channel you think it did.
