Attackers were using two Ivanti Connect Secure zero-days together in real-world assaults from at least 1 October 2024 — months before Ivanti had a fix ready for either flaw. The vendor has now released patches for both, but the sequence of events matters more to defenders than the patch announcement itself: the fixes arrived long after the chain was already in use, which means an upgrade alone does not tell you whether your gateway was ever touched.
Two flaws, one attack path
The vulnerabilities are CVE-2025-22457, a stack-based buffer overflow in Connect Secure rated 9.0 on the CVSS scale, and CVE-2024-53704, an authentication weakness in the product's SSL VPN component. (The first carries a 2025 identifier because that is when the issue was formally catalogued — the campaign against it was already under way well before that.)
The detail worth acting on is not the pair of CVE listings but the fact that they were chained: the authentication bypass was used to get past the VPN gate, and the overflow delivered code execution behind it. That combination is what turned two separate weaknesses into a dependable route to authenticated access and remote code execution on internet-facing gateways.
Chaining also changes what "mitigated" means. If you have blocked, virtually patched, or applied a WAF rule covering only one leg of the pair, the attack path is still open. Partial coverage of a chained exploit is closer to no coverage than most remediation tickets assume.
Why this is a patch-priority item
Connect Secure appliances live at the network edge by design — they are the VPN front door for remote staff and branch offices. Once one is compromised, the attacker sits inside the perimeter with traffic that looks legitimate, which makes detection far harder than with a noisy external break-in. Organisations in Hong Kong running Ivanti Connect Secure, or exposing it to the internet in any form, should treat this as a priority item rather than a routine maintenance ticket.
The version landscape matters as much as the CVE identifiers. Ivanti's advisory specifies affected and fixed release ranges per product line; the fix shipped for Connect Secure as build 22.7R2.5, and administrators should check Ivanti's current advisory for the definitive fixed release rather than assuming a cited build is the final word. An appliance one maintenance update behind the fixed release is still exposed — confirm the exact build, do not infer scope.
Remediation checklist
- Inventory. Identify every Connect Secure appliance in the estate, including forgotten or duplicated gateways, and record firmware versions and internet exposure.
- Patch. Upgrade affected appliances to the current fixed release. Where an immediate upgrade is not feasible, restrict management-interface exposure and apply vendor mitigations as an interim step only — never as the end state.
- Verify integrity. Run Ivanti's external Integrity Checker against each gateway. Ivanti's guidance is explicit: a failed check means the appliance must be treated as compromised, and incident response should begin immediately rather than after further confirmation.
- Hunt retrospectively. Because exploitation dates back to at least 1 October 2024, patching alone does not close the exposure window. Search logs, active sessions, scheduled tasks and configuration changes for signs of persistence, and review Ivanti's published indicators of compromise (IOCs).
- Rotate credentials. Reset local and directory passwords, administrative credentials, and any secrets or certificates that could have been harvested from a compromised gateway — then force re-authentication of existing VPN sessions.
The gap that should change your process
The uncomfortable part of this story is the delay between the start of exploitation and the availability of a vendor fix: for months, defenders had nothing to deploy while attackers already had a working chain. That is why retrospective compromise hunting, not the firmware upgrade, is the real measure of whether an organisation has closed the incident — the patch stops the bleeding, it does not rewind it.
Ivanti's dual-patch release lands amid a sustained run of Connect Secure and edge-gateway vulnerabilities that have repeatedly drawn attention from both researchers and attackers. The pattern is consistent enough to treat edge VPN gateways as a standing priority class: inventory them, patch them on an accelerated clock, verify their integrity, and assume that any gap between exploitation and disclosure needs to be investigated after the fix ships, not just acknowledged.
