Two flaws in Barracuda's product line could be chained together to walk past authorization checks and finish with root privileges on a susceptible device, the vendor disclosed this week. The Hacker News carried the details on 3 November.
The pair consists of a pre-authentication authorization bypass and a command injection vulnerability, assigned CVE identifiers including CVE-2026-116606, which carries a CVSS score of 9.3. Barracuda says it has seen no evidence of exploitation in the wild, and no public proof-of-concept accompanies the disclosure. Fixes are being delivered through the company's coordinated disclosure process.
How the chain works
Neither bug is the whole story on its own. The advisory presents them as a sequence: the bypass fires before authentication, potentially opening functionality that would otherwise sit behind a login, and the command injection flaw converts that foothold into execution of attacker-controlled commands with root privileges.
That is why the vendor disclosed them as one chained issue. The bypass alone gets you in; the injection alone needs somewhere to stand. Read together, they describe a route from no credentials at all to full control of the appliance.
The 9.3 deserves the same careful read. A severity rating hung on a chaining-dependent bug describes what is possible, not a guaranteed, turnkey recipe. There is no public proof-of-concept referenced in the disclosure, and no known exploitation. The score reflects worst-case impact if the conditions line up — which is precisely why patch decisions shouldn't wait for someone else to line them up first.
What operators should do
- Start with the vendor advisory. Confirm exact models and firmware versions against Barracuda's affected-products list before assuming your estate is in scope — or out of it. This story deliberately does not reproduce that list; the advisory is authoritative.
- Patch internet-facing appliances first. One of the two flaws operates pre-authentication, which makes exposure to the public internet a risk factor in itself. "It's on a trusted internal network" is an increasingly shaky assumption for perimeter hardware.
- Lock down management access to known addresses, jump hosts, or a VPN, and remove direct administrative exposure wherever patching will take time.
- Review logs on affected devices for unusual authentication attempts and command-execution activity.
- Rotate privileged credentials if an appliance's exposure predates the patch.
For Hong Kong small businesses and managed service providers running Barracuda gear, the practical first step is the same as anywhere else: reconcile the vendor's affected-products list against the asset inventory, then check HKCERT's vulnerability notices for locally mirrored advisories covering the same issue.
Why the urgency is credible even without an exploit
Barracuda's track record is part of the story. In 2023, a zero-day in its Email Security Gateway Appliance went unpatched for years and ultimately forced customers to replace the hardware outright. That episode is the backdrop against which a coordinated, vendor-initiated disclosure should be read: no known exploitation today does not mean no exploitation tomorrow, particularly for a flaw that needs no credentials to trigger.
Appliances are, in the end, software behind a bezel — and they age, get skipped in patch cycles, and sit at the edge of the network. Treating this advisory as a same-week task rather than a backlog item is the safer bet.
Details on affected models and fixed firmware versions are available in Barracuda's advisory, as reported by The Hacker News.
