Sogou Input Method DNS Requests Hijacked to Deliver DarkVigil Implant, Researchers Say
Cleartext HTTP communications in the Windows edition of Sogou Input Method — a Chinese-language typing utility installed on millions of machines — were abused to hijack DNS requests and deliver a surveillance implant, according to research reported by The Hacker News on 4 November.
The interception requires nothing more than a position on the network path: because the input method sends its lookups over unencrypted HTTP on port 80, an attacker can observe and rewrite them in transit — no memory-corruption exploit and no compromise of the software's build pipeline.
The campaign, attributed by the researching team to a threat actor it calls SlippyNunchucks, has been running since 1 July 2026. The researchers characterise the actor as China-aligned and say the operation is designed to deploy an implant tracked as DarkVigil, also known as FDMTP. That attribution, and the actor's assessed alignment, represent the reporting vendor's conclusion and should be treated as pending independent corroboration.
A mundane weakness in a trusted utility
What makes the technique notable is its simplicity. Any on-path attacker — on the same Wi-Fi, the same segment, or a compromised router — can observe the input method's unencrypted lookups and redirect domain name resolutions toward infrastructure they control, with no exploit required.
The victim then receives whatever the attacker serves, in this case the DarkVigil backdoor, while the application itself appears to behave normally.
For anyone assessing supply-chain exposure, the lesson extends beyond software factories. Input methods are among the most-trusted components on a desktop: they sit in every text field, run with high privileges, and are rarely subject to the security reviews applied to browsers or endpoint agents. When such a utility fails to encrypt its egress, a cheap and difficult-to-detect interception point opens up — and every update cycle keeps the door open.
That relevance is not limited to any single market. Sogou's install base is concentrated among Chinese-language Windows users across Greater China, which makes the affected software broadly common on desks in Hong Kong and the region. Any organisation where staff run the tool should treat it as an in-scope network dependency, not as a benign productivity accessory. The source material does not specify which organisations or sectors were targeted, and no local victim profile has been confirmed.
What defenders should do
The researchers' mitigations, as reported, point to a short but concrete checklist:
- Enforce HTTPS-only egress. Block cleartext HTTP from managed endpoints, or at minimum flag it, so that an IME quietly falling back to port 80 does not go unnoticed.
- Baseline and log DNS traffic. Unusual resolution patterns — repeated queries to unfamiliar domains from a single process, or sudden shifts in authoritative servers — are the visible residue of this technique.
- Consider DNS encryption. Deploying DNS-over-HTTPS or DNS-over-TLS limits the ability of an on-path attacker to observe or rewrite lookups, though it should complement, not replace, application-level fixes.
- Inventory input methods. Add IMEs to the software asset register and their network behaviour to egress allowlists.
Specific affected version ranges and indicators of compromise were not detailed in the material reviewed here; readers should consult the researchers' full disclosure before applying patch or blocking decisions.
For the wider IT community, the story is a reminder that supply-chain risk is not confined to dependencies pulled at build time. It also lives in the utilities employees type with every day — and in the unencrypted requests they send.
