A phishing campaign tracked by security vendor Material Security as Operation CloudFire is targeting corporate Google accounts through a chain that begins with an unexpected Google Calendar invite and ends with the attacker holding an authenticated session rather than a password, according to research covered by BleepingComputer.

The chain works by borrowing trust at each hop. An unexpected calendar invite arrives from a legitimate Google service, carries an innocuous-looking link, and routes through a trusted, high-reputation redirect before landing the recipient on a lookalike login page. Because the early stages pass through reputable infrastructure, conventional link scanners and user suspicion are both weakened. The final stage is where the MFA bypass claim lands: the objective is not merely to capture credentials the attacker must then replay, but to end up with a usable session — the state that multi-factor prompts during login are not designed to police. The source material does not detail how that session is captured, whether by relaying the authentication, stealing a token outright, or completing the sign-in on the attacker's side.

That distinction is the story for security teams. MFA, including time-based one-time passwords, hardens the moment of authentication; it does little to protect the session established afterwards. Any chain that yields a live, authenticated session effectively renders the login-time prompt moot. Material Security describes how its team tracked the attacks and blocked malicious messages, and says it contributed to the takedown of close to 900 domains used by the operation. That figure is the vendor's own account of its involvement. Material Security sells mail-security and session-recovery tooling, so it has a commercial interest in the findings — a caveat worth carrying alongside them. Treat the takedown as a temporary disruption to infrastructure, not a conclusion to the campaign; victim counts have not been disclosed.

What Google Workspace administrators should check

  • Invite hygiene. Review calendar invite settings that permit events from unknown external senders, and require invitations with links to pass through review before they appear on user calendars. Warn staff that a Google-sourced invite is not, by itself, an authenticity signal.
  • Inspect the whole redirect chain. Train users and configure tooling to evaluate final destinations, not just the display text or the first hop. A link that begins on a Google domain can still resolve elsewhere.
  • Move privileged accounts to phishing-resistant MFA. Passkeys or hardware security keys bind authentication to the origin, defeating lookalike login pages in a way that TOTP codes cannot. This is the single most important control for this class of attack.
  • Shorten session lifetimes and require continuous evaluation. Conditional access policies that re-check device trust, location, and risk during a session reduce the value of a stolen token even when the initial login was legitimate.
  • Monitor for anomalous sessions. Flag sign-ins that skip expected MFA steps, originate from unfamiliar ASNs or geographies shortly after a normal login, or show simultaneous activity across regions.

The broader lesson is architectural: session tokens are credentials too, and they deserve the same lifecycle controls — issuance, rotation, revocation, and monitoring — as passwords. For IT teams in Hong Kong running Google Workspace, the campaign is a useful stress test of whether their current MFA posture protects only the front door or the building afterwards.

MFA(包括 time-based one-time password,TOTP)強化的是認證那一刻;對其後建立的 session 保護甚微。

Google Workspace
