The most consequential part of Omarchy 4.5, released today, is not the desktop polish — it is that the Arch Linux-based distribution now installs natively on Apple Silicon Macs.

As Phoronix notes in its coverage of the release, the version bump also carries a batch of desktop customisations. Those changes will animate the changelog threads, but they are not the story. For anyone who has wanted an Arch-derived Linux laptop without hand-assembling the stack, native M-series support is the reason to pay attention.

Why Apple Silicon is the real news

Until now, running Linux on Apple's ARM laptops has essentially meant starting from Asahi Linux: a capable but deliberately incremental effort that asks users to wire together a kernel, a Wayland compositor, device enablement, and their own configuration before anything resembling a daily-driver desktop exists. Experienced Arch users can do that work. For everyone else, it is the barrier.

Omarchy 4.5 collapses that assembly step by shipping a pre-integrated path onto the same underlying support. Instead of curating the pieces individually, users get an opinionated distribution that aims to boot and work on M-series machines out of the box. For a project whose entire premise is a batteries-included, opinionated setup, treating Apple's hardware as a first-class install target is a natural extension of that philosophy — and a signal that the hard part is no longer the kernel, but the packaging.

Read the fine print

"Supported" here should be read as "installs and works in the common case," not as parity with macOS. Rendering on Apple Silicon depends on the open-source Asahi graphics stack rather than Apple's proprietary drivers, and the slower-maturing pieces — Wi-Fi, GPU acceleration, suspend and resume, external display handling — typically lag the base boot experience. Verify the specifics against the project's own documentation before wiping a machine.

Two further caveats apply regardless of hardware. Rolling releases trade long-term stability for continuously updated packages, so occasional breakage after updates is part of the bargain. And Omarchy is opinionated by design: it replaces the traditional "build it yourself" Arch experience with a preconfigured desktop and a fixed set of choices. That makes it a poor fit for anyone who wants to hand-pick every component, and a good fit for someone who wants Arch's packages, documentation, and ecosystem without spending a weekend on dotfiles.

The wider ARM signal

The direction matters more than the version number. An opinionated, batteries-included Arch derivative deciding that Apple's ARM laptops warrant first-class support is a practical marker of ARM moving from niche curiosity to mainstream install target — the sort of shift that changes which hardware local buyers consider viable.

For Hong Kong IT professionals and open-source enthusiasts, that is worth noting as a general observation about where desktop Linux hardware support is heading. It is explicitly not a deployment recommendation: the release carries no Hong Kong-specific implications of its own.

Omarchy 4.5 is available for download from the project's distribution channels.
