Truffle Security opens free program to invalidate 1.4 million live leaked secrets
Security firm Truffle Security has launched the Secrets Revocation Program, a free initiative aimed at helping API key issuers revoke roughly 1.4 million publicly exposed credentials that, according to the company, remain valid today. The announcement was reported by BleepingComputer.
The headline number is the hook, but the more useful story for anyone who maintains code is the gap it exposes: finding a leaked secret and actually killing it are two different problems, and only one of them is usually automated.
Detection is not remediation
Secret scanners such as TruffleHog routinely surface API keys, tokens and passwords sitting in public repositories, commit histories and CI logs. What most of this tooling cannot do is revoke the credential. Only the service that issued a key can invalidate it — and typically that service has no idea the key was leaked. Meanwhile, the developer or organisation that accidentally committed it rarely holds the authority to disable it at the issuer, particularly when the account belongs to a departed employee, a contractor or a third-party vendor.
The result is a stalemate in which the credential stays live indefinitely while the exposure is "known" only to whoever ran the scanner. Truffle Security's program is structured to connect those two sides: teams that discover leaked keys can submit them, and issuers who can act on them get a free route to revocation.
Equally important is what revocation actually requires. Deleting a secret from your current source tree accomplishes almost nothing — the value persists in every prior commit, fork, mirror, cached build artefact and log line. The correct order of operations is revoke at the issuer first, then rotate to a new credential, then scrub history if policy demands it. Scanning before revoking is the common inversion, and it leaves the original key working the whole time.
If you're affected
A practical sequence for checking your own estate:
- Scan broadly — private repos, archived branches, forks, plus CI/CD logs and configuration stores — with a secrets scanner such as TruffleHog or an equivalent tool.
- Treat every hit as live until proven otherwise; do not assume an old key has expired.
- Revoke first at the issuing service — the console or admin API of the provider that minted the key — then rotate to a replacement and update your deployment, secrets manager and team in one pass.
- Lock down the path that leaked it: tighten pre-commit hooks, restrict log verbosity for environment variables, and review who holds standing access to the issuer account.
The revocation step is the one most often skipped, precisely because it sits outside the developer's toolchain. Truffle Security's premise is that closing that loop — rather than shipping yet another detector — is where the remaining risk actually lives.
For open-source maintainers and small teams in particular, the appeal of a free program is straightforward: the hard part of a leaked credential is rarely the identification, and the part that costs money or influence is getting the issuing party to act. Any initiative that shortens that path is worth watching as credential exposures continue to scale.

Truffle Security
