Linux 7.4's first release candidate compiles faster than Linux 7.3 in the scenarios the new build-system work targets — but the tree it is compiling has swollen enough to swallow part of that advantage.

That is the picture drawn by Phoronix's head-to-head build-time comparison of 7.3 versus 7.4-rc1, run on a Framework Laptop 13 Pro with an Intel Panther Lake processor. The optimisation patches scheduled for this merge window have started landing, and their effects are now visible in real compile runs.

Smarter tooling against a fatter tree

This cycle is effectively a tug-of-war. On one side, a patch series aimed squarely at the kernel build system has begun to land, promising much faster incremental rebuilds and near-instant "noop" builds — runs in which nothing has changed and the toolchain should ideally do almost no work. On the other side, the kernel source tree keeps expanding release after release, adding files and objects that every full compile must chew through.

The specific wall-clock results from the Framework 13 Pro / Panther Lake testing — full builds, incremental rebuilds and noop runs — are laid out in Phoronix's own testing and worth reading directly.

Because of that push-and-pull, the headline outcome is nuanced rather than sweeping. The gains are sharpest on the incremental and noop paths, where the new tooling can skip work it used to repeat. Clean, from-scratch builds absorb more of the codebase-growth penalty, which softens the overall delta between 7.3 and 7.4-rc1.

A ten-second projection, not a benchmark

The most attention-grabbing figure circulating with this work is the suggestion that kernel builds could approach roughly ten seconds — but that number is a projection, not a measured result. It describes what the complete patch series is expected to enable on systems with a large number of CPU cores, and it is not a wall-clock time that Phoronix's laptop produced.

In practice, developers should expect directional gains rather than a specific target. Wall-clock build times scale heavily with core count, memory bandwidth, storage speed and compiler version, so a desktop workstation or a beefy build server will land somewhere quite different from a Panther Lake laptop.

Caveats worth carrying

Two limitations frame the findings. First, the benchmarks cover one machine and one CPU architecture; the optimisations are broadly architecture-agnostic, but the exact seconds saved will vary. Second, RC1 is an early verdict. Build-system patches of this kind have historically trickled in across the merge window rather than arriving all at once, so the measured gap could widen before 7.4 ships.

For the wider open-source community, the story matters well beyond raw seconds. Kernel compile time is a tax paid daily by distribution packagers, CI farms and hobbyists bisecting bugs alike. Faster incremental and noop builds shorten feedback loops directly — and they arrive just as the tree's growth has made naive full rebuilds steadily more expensive.

The optimisation-versus-growth dynamic is not going away. But if the series lands as intended, Linux 7.4 could mark the point where build-system improvements begin to offset the cost of a growing tree.
