Two vulnerabilities in Barracuda's Email Security Gateway can be chained together to execute commands as root — the appliance's highest privilege level — without any attacker credentials, according to an analysis published by security firm watchTowr and reported by The Hacker News on 6 November. The entry point is an unauthenticated restore operation: a single call the attacker can trigger without ever logging in.

Barracuda shipped patches for the flaws on Monday; watchTowr published details of the full attack chain on Thursday.

The chain, not the CVEs, is the story

The primary flaw, CVE-2026-116606, is an authorization bypass. It allows an unauthenticated remote attacker to trigger a privileged restore operation that should require administrative credentials. Combined with a second flaw in the appliance, that bypass is enough to reach arbitrary command execution as root on an internet-facing device.

That combination matters more than either CVE in isolation. Email security gateways sit at the network edge and are routinely exposed to the public internet, because that is where they must receive mail. An unauthenticated path to root on such a device offers an attacker a foothold with visibility into — and control over — mail flow, without ever touching a password.

Because no credentials enter the picture, the controls organisations typically lean on for initial-access defence become largely ineffective here: multi-factor authentication, password rotation and account-monitoring rules have nothing to act on when an attack never authenticates in the first place. Patching is, in practical terms, the only meaningful control.

Barracuda's advisory lists the specific fixed versions for each affected release train; customers should verify their deployed build against that advisory rather than assume an existing maintenance release is sufficient.

What to do now

For Hong Kong enterprises and managed service providers running Barracuda appliances, the practical sequence is straightforward:

  1. Inventory and patch immediately. Identify every deployed Email Security Gateway, including any operated on behalf of downstream customers, and confirm each runs a version listed as fixed in Barracuda's advisory. For MSPs, a single unpatched multi-tenant gateway can place every client behind it at risk, so version verification across the whole estate is the first move.
  2. Restrict management access. Administrative interfaces should not be reachable from the open internet. Place them behind VPN or restrict them to a small set of management source addresses.
  3. Audit logs for anomalous restore activity. Look for unauthorised or unexpected restore operations and for command execution artefacts that should not accompany routine administration.
  4. Hunt for follow-on activity. If an appliance was exposed during the interval between Monday's patch release and public analysis this week, assume nothing about its integrity until verified — rebuild or forensic review may be warranted for devices showing suspicious behaviour.

Why it matters

The window between a vendor shipping a fix and independent researchers publishing a working exploit methodology is precisely when unpatched deployments are most exposed: defenders have been told a problem exists, but many will not yet have acted, and attackers can now read the same public detail. For a class of device that is deliberately internet-facing and, in the MSP model, multiply shared, that window rewards speed. Organisations running these gateways should treat this week's disclosures as a patch-now item rather than a patch-this-cycle one.
