A convenience feature in Anthropic's Claude Desktop could be converted into a remote code execution channel by a malicious browser extension, according to researchers at endpoint security firm Forever Security, whose proof of concept was reported by The Hacker News on 6 November.

The chain works like this: an extension with script access to claude.ai injects content into the chat interface; that content triggers Dispatch, a Claude feature designed to let people hand tasks from their phone to Claude Desktop; and Claude Desktop then executes code on the user's machine. Nothing in the flow requires a memory-corruption bug or a compromised binary. The flaw, the researchers said, is an assumption baked into Dispatch: that anything arriving through it originated with the user. Once a browser extension can originate those requests instead, the trust boundary between the browser and local execution dissolves.

Forever Security demonstrated the sequence as a proof of concept rather than documenting wild exploitation, and said the underlying flaw remains exploitable. No fix was disclosed as of publication, and no detailed reproduction steps had been published at that time — a gap that should be treated as an open risk rather than a closed incident.

Why extension review is now an AI problem

The story matters less for the specific product involved than for what it reveals about a new class of agentic-AI risk. Extension store reviewers evaluate requests for cookies, browsing history, and tab access. They do not evaluate whether an extension can steer an AI agent that has hands on the machine — because, until recently, that combination did not meaningfully exist. The implication that any extension holding script permissions on an AI chat domain now carries potential downstream execution reach is an inference for the category, not a claim the researchers have made; either way, that reach is invisible to the review process that was supposed to be the gatekeeper.

Equally, no single component owner — browser, extension store, or AI vendor — is solely positioned to secure this. The browser cannot see what Dispatch does downstream; the extension store cannot see what an AI agent will do with injected text; the AI vendor cannot see what prompted the request. The gap sits precisely in the seams between them, which is why it survived scrutiny from each party individually.

What users and administrators can do

The following is editorial guidance from this publication, not instruction from the vendor or the researchers:

  • Treat Dispatch as a privileged channel. If the phone-to-desktop handoff is not required for daily work, disable it.
  • Audit extension host permissions on AI domains. Extensions with script access to claude.ai and comparable chat interfaces deserve the same scrutiny as anything with enterprise data access.
  • Enforce extension allowlists rather than relying on store reputation, and review permissions on a schedule rather than at installation only.
  • Apply least-privilege controls to Claude Desktop, including restrictions on what it may execute.
  • Monitor dispatch activity — it is the visible indicator that this path is being exercised.

For IT teams evaluating agentic AI tooling, the takeaway is structural: features that bridge a user's devices are also features that bridge trust boundaries, and that bridging needs to be an explicit part of the security review.
