Linux stable-kernel maintainer Greg Kroah-Hartman has announced seven stable releases in quick succession, each carrying fixes for three vulnerabilities in the kernel's Xen support code.
The batch arrives hot on the heels of a pair of stable updates published shortly beforehand and reaches from the newest stable line down to long-term branches still carrying production workloads. The seven versions are 7.3.3, 6.18.62, 6.12.116, 6.6.162, 6.1.192, 5.15.225 and 5.10.274.
What was fixed
All seven releases address the same three flaws, identified as CVE-2026-100080, CVE-2026-100081 and CVE-2026-100082. Two of the three permit denial of service and, in some scenarios, information leakage; CVE-2026-100081 additionally allows a local attacker to escalate privileges. The announcement advises administrators running Xen to apply the updates.
The report does not spell out how each distribution has handled the fixes. In practice, the major distributions maintain their own stable backports and generally ship security fixes on their own cadence rather than tracking upstream point releases verbatim, so the appropriate source of truth for any given deployment is the distribution's own advisory channel rather than the upstream version number alone. Administrators needing CVE-level detail for a ticket or compliance record can cross-check the stable-kernel mailing list archive, the kernel.org stable queue entries for each release, and the national vulnerability database.
Who should update, and when
Three long-term-support branches in this batch are the ones most likely to matter to operators of long-lived fleets:
- 6.6 (now at 6.6.162) — a common target for current enterprise rollouts.
- 6.1 (now at 6.1.192) — still common on systems installed over the past couple of years.
- 5.15 (now at 5.15.225) — the oldest of the three in this set, alongside 5.10.274 for fleets that have not yet moved off that line.
The practical guidance follows from where the affected code executes. Systems that run a Xen host or guest should treat these updates as a priority, in line with the upstream advice to upgrade. Systems that never touch Xen are exposed only indirectly — the fixed flaws sit in Xen-specific code paths — so those deployments can fold the updates into their normal patch cycle rather than breaking emergency change windows. Confirm the specifics against your distribution's advisories before setting change-window priorities.
For operators managing many kernel branches at once, a seven-release drop like this one is a useful reminder of the volume of security maintenance flowing through the stable project. Tracking a single branch is manageable; tracking a heterogeneous estate across three or more LTS lines means your update tooling, not your alertness, is the thing that determines whether a fix lands in time.
Why it matters
Individual stable point releases rarely make headlines. The more informative signal here is the shape of the batch: seven branches updated together for issues in a subsystem that many installations never enable shows how broadly the stable project backports security fixes regardless of how widely the affected code path is used. For anyone responsible for patch SLAs, that breadth is the argument for automated, per-branch update tracking rather than ad-hoc review.
