Comma.ai founder George Hotz has announced the Chestnut and Tiny Chestnut external compute docks, distinguishing the hardware with a fully open-source firmware stack. According to the announcement, the enclosures are built around a PCIe Gen4 x4 to USB4 bridge and will be offered with an AMD Radeon RX 9060 8GB GPU configuration. The project positions the docks as a reference platform for Linux development and machine learning workloads.
Both models route PCIe Gen4 x4 signals over a single USB4 connection. This architecture is designed to bypass the bandwidth limitations of traditional external GPU enclosures, delivering near-desktop performance for graphics rendering, AI/ML inference, and CI/CD pipelines. By adhering to the USB4 standard, the hardware maintains compatibility with modern laptops and mini workstations without requiring proprietary host controllers.
The release publishes the complete controller firmware under an open license. Conventional eGPU docks typically depend on closed-source microcontroller code, which has historically fragmented Linux driver support and delayed security patches. Comma.ai’s open stack enables independent code audits, community-driven maintenance, and direct configuration of thermal and power profiles. The company states this approach is intended to ensure long-term kernel compatibility and reduce reliance on manufacturer update cycles.
Commercial and technical specifications remain undisclosed. Pricing, retail availability, power delivery limits, active cooling capacity, and maximum GPU clearance have not been published. The project has also not released formal contribution guidelines, a firmware update cadence, or a long-term maintenance roadmap. Independent community testing will be required to verify real-world throughput, latency, and cross-distribution Linux compatibility before the hardware can be evaluated for production deployments.
