In recent years, immutable and atomic architectures have gained increasing traction across the Linux distribution landscape. Fedora offers Silverblue and Kinoite as its Atomic variants, openSUSE has introduced Kalpa, and Vanilla OS follows the same design philosophy. For end users in Hong Kong, the practical appeal is straightforward: a read-only root partition, updates delivered as whole-image snapshots, and the ability to roll back instantly when something goes wrong. For system administrators and developers who prioritise stability without wanting to hand-tune environments on a daily basis, this model is particularly attractive.
Now the desktop communities themselves are getting into the act. KDE Linux (linux.kde.org), the KDE Project's own distribution, has just marked its second year. According to KDE's own announcements, this represents the KDE community's second attempt at building a distribution. The project was first introduced under the codename "Project Banana" by Harald Sitter at the Akademy 2024 conference. Then, on 6 September 2025, Nate Graham announced the first alpha-quality build on his personal blog — a date that coincided with Akademy 2025.
KDE Linux follows a rolling-release model built on an Arch base with an immutable root filesystem, with the goal of achieving the tightest possible integration between the Plasma desktop and the underlying system. It is worth noting that KDE neon functions as a software delivery channel rather than a complete distribution; KDE Linux therefore represents the KDE community's first genuine, end-to-end distribution effort. A recent LWN.net report examining the project's two-year trajectory also noted that the division of labour between Graham and Sitter has been a key factor in keeping the project moving forward.
That said, alpha is alpha — the installer, hardware coverage, and update workflow are still undergoing shake-down and remain unsuitable for use as a daily driver. But for the KDE community itself, shipping an alpha build in the project's second year is itself a meaningful signal: upstream wants greater control over the desktop experience, the ability to fix problems immediately rather than waiting for downstream distributions to pick up the changes, and a tighter feedback loop. Over time, these improvements and lessons learned are expected to filter back into other Plasma-based distributions.
For Hong Kong's open-source community and IT departments, the more interesting question is not whether to install it right away, but how KDE's shift from "packaging the desktop for others" to "operating its own platform" will reshape the Plasma ecosystem. With the desktop's core community now backing the immutable model, the range of choices is only set to grow.

KDE 計劃自家的發行版 KDE Linux(linux.kde.org)剛滿兩年。
