Security researchers have disclosed an AI-augmented initial access campaign aimed at WordPress sites, e-commerce platforms and critical infrastructure entities in Ukraine. According to reporting from The Hacker News covering a set of researcher disclosures, the activity pairs commodity offensive tooling such as Cobalt Strike with an AI orchestration layer powered by Anthropic's Claude Code, and has been attributed to an actor tracked as CyberXero.
The story is not "AI wrote malware" — it's AI as the orchestration hub
The most significant aspect of this case is not a large language model generating malicious code on its own. It is that an agentic coding tool was repurposed as a command-and-control interface for attack operations. Researchers say the operator used Claude Code to coordinate multi-step intrusion workflows, stitching together scanning, exploitation, credential theft and data exfiltration into a pipeline that would otherwise have required manual, operator-driven execution at every stage.
Reporting relayed through Security Affairs describes the campaign involving as many as 51 agents working in parallel across assigned tasks — a figure that currently circulates only through limited researcher accounts and has not been independently corroborated. If it holds up, it would suggest a single operator can run AI agents at a scale previously difficult to achieve without a larger team. The campaign is ultimately accused of exfiltrating more than 628,000 records belonging to Ukrainian entities.
The real warning is a detection blind spot
For defenders, the signal here matters more than the headline numbers. AI-agent-driven intrusions produce a distinctive activity profile: high-frequency, small-step, multi-tool action flows — scattered API calls, file reads and command executions spread across different times and sources. Detection rules built around individual indicators of compromise (malicious IPs, file hashes, known CVE identifiers) can easily misclassify these actions as noise, or mistake them for legitimate automation and let them pass.
In effect, threat actors are wearing the "normal operating mode" of agentic tooling as camouflage. Security teams whose SIEM and SOAR rules still assume static, single-point IOCs as the design primitive face a clear blind spot when confronted with this kind of bursty, multi-step automated activity.
A defensive checklist for your own agentic-AI deployments
Teams introducing — or already running — agentic development tools such as Claude Code, Cursor or GitHub Copilot agent features should consider the following:
- Treat agent action logs as first-class security telemetry. Do not file them away as developer audit records; ingest them into the SIEM in near real time and correlate them against identity and endpoint logs.
- Build behavioural baselines for automated activity. Look for patterns — dense bursts of cross-tool action chains in short windows — rather than chasing individual IOCs.
- Grant agents least privilege and enforce human-in-the-loop approval. Any action touching credentials, outbound connections or production databases should sit behind an explicit approval gate.
- Separate agent identities from human accounts. Use dedicated service accounts, separate credentials and network segmentation so that post-incident attribution remains possible.
- Regularly review the supply chain and model-provider policies behind your agentic tools, covering data retention, telemetry uploads and prompt-leakage exposure.
The CyberXero case shows that the AI orchestration layer has moved out of the lab and into live attack operations. The pressing task for defenders is to bring detection and governance capability up to the same curve — otherwise, the automation dividend accrues to attackers first.
