The detection-to-decision shift in SOC architecture — and what security teams should actually test
In the space of roughly three weeks, a new category of AI model went from nonexistent to everywhere in security tooling. TypeSafe AI released Jev on 15 September, branding it a "System One" model after Daniel Kahneman's fast, intuitive mode of thinking. OpenAI announced its own Decisions API at its DevDay event and opened a public beta on 6 October. Cribl published cribl-decision, an open LoRA adapter that can be run locally. Others, including a vendor called Laya, have followed.
The Hacker News, which covered the wave, identifies security operations centres as the first destination for these models. That framing is worth examining carefully — because the interesting story here is not a general advance in AI, but a specific architectural slot in the SOC stack.
A component, not a category
The defensible technical proposition is narrow: these models produce bounded outputs — escalate, suppress, enrich — under tight latency budgets. That is a detection-to-decision handoff, not cognition. The Kahneman "System One" framing is product positioning, not research lineage; the gap between a fast heuristic classifier and human intuitive judgement is not closed by giving it a name borrowed from behavioural economics.
The speed of vendor coalescence around the term — three weeks from no shared vocabulary to a claimed category — is a marketing signal, not evidence the term is technically meaningful. At least one of the releases also sits close to the vendor's own commercial interest. Security buyers should treat the label with the same scepticism they would apply to any vendor-invented taxonomy.
Why the local adapter matters most
Of the releases, Cribl's open LoRA adapter is arguably the strategically significant one, despite attracting less attention than the better-known hosted offerings. Local deployment buys three things procurement teams actually argue about: data residency, predictable cost, and independent testability.
The residency argument is worth pausing on for Hong Kong organisations specifically. Sending triage telemetry to a hosted inference endpoint is a data-flow decision with compliance implications under the Personal Data (Privacy) Ordinance; running an adapter on-premises keeps the traffic inside the boundary. That said, PDPO obligations attach to the data being processed regardless of where inference happens — local execution simplifies the audit story, it does not remove the obligation. This is an editorial observation about the jurisdictional landscape, not a claim from the source coverage.
Local deployment also removes an awkward dependency: you are not calling a vendor API whose pricing, rate limits, or deprecation timeline you do not control.
An actionable, premise-free test
Whether or not "decision model" survives as a category, there is a test any SOC team can run now that does not depend on believing the premise:
- Run the adapter locally against your own historical triage queue.
- Measure precision and recall on your data — not a vendor benchmark.
- Keep the audit trail for every automated decision.
This is valuable regardless of whether the category survives. It also surfaces the three questions that should carry into any evaluation of this technology:
- True end-to-end latency, including context retrieval, not just model inference time.
- Behaviour on out-of-distribution inputs — what does the model do on alert types it was never trained on, and does it fail loudly or silently?
- Where the audit trail lives, and whether an analyst can reconstruct why a decision was made.
What remains unresolved
No widely accepted benchmark exists for decision-model performance in security contexts specifically. Integration patterns are also unsettled: these models may land as autonomous triage agents, as analyst-assist tools, or as components in larger agentic pipelines, and the governance implications differ sharply between those designs.
Finally, automated blocking and escalation carry consequences that pure classification does not. A model that misclassifies an image is an annoyance; a model that suppresses an alert that turned out to be a real intrusion is a liability event. Governance frameworks for that posture remain immature industry-wide.
The category may or may not survive its own hype cycle. The underlying shift — from detection to decision, under latency pressure — is real, and the open adapter gives teams a way to evaluate it on their own terms.
