Fedora Linux is considering a move to the RPM v6 packaging format for its Fedora 46 release, according to a report by Phoronix. If it goes ahead, the switch would be the first change to the core RPM package format version since RPM v4 arrived more than two decades ago — a format that has since underpinned Red Hat Enterprise Linux, Fedora, and their derivatives including AlmaLinux and Rocky Linux.
It is worth being precise about the status of this: it remains a Fedora 46 proposal, not a done deal, and the transition has only been under community consideration for that release. Enterprise distributions built on RPM v4 will not follow for years even in the best case. RHEL and its rebuild derivatives typically trail Fedora by several release cycles, and Red Hat's packaging changes tend to land only after long stabilisation periods. For administrators running production fleets, nothing changes today.
The real migration pain: signing pipelines
For enterprise administrators, the headline version bump is less consequential than the operational work it implies. If a format transition happens, the painful part will not be the rpm command on a laptop — it will be everything around it.
Third-party and internally built package repositories are the primary friction point. Any organisation that builds its own RPMs, signs them with an in-house key hierarchy, and publishes them to internal mirrors will need to confirm that its signing infrastructure produces formats compatible with whatever standard ships. Vendor-signed packages from ISVs will not upgrade in lockstep; during any transition window, a mixed-format environment is possible, and tooling that validates packages before distribution will need to handle both.
Automation is the second exposure. Scripts that parse rpm -q or rpm -qp output, configuration management code that inspects package metadata, and CI pipelines that verify signatures before deployment all assume the current format's conventions. Any change to how package metadata is laid out or how dependency and trigger information is expressed could break assumptions in tooling that reads it — which means upgrade paths should be tested in staging well before an enterprise distribution adopts the format.
The wider build ecosystem carries similar risk. Mock, koji, repository managers, and scanners that parse package headers all encode assumptions about the current format; a major version revision propagates further than any single tool.
What to do now
For RHEL, AlmaLinux, and Rocky administrators, the practical takeaway is preparation rather than action. Audit where locally built RPMs are produced and signed. Document which tools in the build chain interact with package metadata. Note any hard dependencies on exact rpm command output formats.
None of this needs to happen urgently — enterprise distributions will lag Fedora's adoption by years, if it happens at all. But after more than twenty years on RPM v4, a format transition has been under consideration long enough that mapping the operational groundwork now is cheaper than doing it under a release deadline later.
Fedora's usual release cadence would place Fedora 46 in 2027, and whether RPM v6 makes the cut will be settled by Fedora's release engineering and engineering steering processes well before then. Administrators tracking the proposal should watch those channels for a formal decision rather than relying on schedule speculation.
