An active campaign is abusing a single compromised Microsoft 365 credential belonging to ConnectWise Cloud Backup — a cloud backup and recovery service used by managed service providers and formerly known as SkyKick — to reach into customers' M365 environments, cybersecurity researchers have warned.
According to researchers cited in a report by The Hacker News, the credential was used by unidentified threat actors to sign in to as many as 173 Microsoft 365 tenants. That figure originates from the researchers' own telemetry rather than a vendor confirmation, and administrators should treat it as an indicative scope marker and cross-check against ConnectWise's own advisories for definitive details.
The campaign is a reminder that much of the risk facing cloud tenants today is structural rather than technical. There is no indication in the disclosure that the attackers exploited a software vulnerability in ConnectWise Cloud Backup itself. Instead, they appear to have abused the trust relationship the product holds with the tenants it serves. Backup platforms built for MSPs typically authenticate with delegated or service-principal permissions that span every customer environment the provider manages. Those identities are powerful, long-lived, and — because they are workload identities rather than interactive users — often operate outside the multi-factor authentication and conditional access protections that organizations apply to their staff.
The result is a large blast radius from one set of credentials: an attacker who compromises the MSP-side identity inherits the reach of the service it belongs to, with no phishing of tenant end-users required.
For Microsoft 365 administrators — including those in Hong Kong's managed-services and in-house IT teams, who run on the same shared platform architecture — the incident points to a concrete audit agenda rather than a purely reactive posture:
- Inventory delegated and service-principal access. Enumerate every application and service principal with tenant-wide or cross-tenant permissions, and retire any that are no longer required.
- Review OAuth consent grants. Look for overly broad or legacy consent entries, and monitor new consent activity.
- Extend MFA and conditional access to workload identities. Verify that policies actually cover service principals and non-interactive sign-ins, not just human accounts.
- Disable legacy authentication protocols wherever they are still permitted, since they bypass modern authentication protections.
- Apply RMM-level scrutiny to backup and remote access tooling. These platforms are pre-authorized, broadly scoped, and frequently left unaudited — deserving the same monitoring intensity that MSP remote monitoring software now receives.
- Review sign-in logs for unusual service-principal or non-interactive authentications, especially from unfamiliar IP ranges or geographies.
The under-scrutinized status of backup platforms is arguably the sharpest lesson here. MSP tooling has drawn increasing attention since the Kaseya VSA incident, but backup and recovery products remain comparatively opaque in many security programs — despite holding exactly the kind of standing access that makes a single compromise consequential.
On vendor remediation, the disclosure reviewed here does not indicate whether ConnectWise has rotated the affected credential, revoked the associated access, or issued customer-specific guidance. ConnectWise Cloud Backup customers should monitor the company's advisory channels directly for confirmation of scope and any required action, and treat the researchers' 173-tenant figure as provisional until a primary vendor statement is available. If a formal advisory or Microsoft statement emerges, it may clarify both the true tenant count and what, if anything, affected customers need to do.
For now, the operative takeaway is simple: in an MSP-driven cloud, one provider-side credential can become everyone's credential.
