Microsoft has published guidance for IT administrators whose applications depend on the retired Exchange Web Services (EWS) interface in Exchange Online, confirming that the API can be switched back on to restore functionality while longer-term migration work proceeds.

According to BleepingComputer, Microsoft says admins can re-enable EWS in Exchange Online to fix EWS-connected apps that have stopped working since the interface was retired. The acknowledgement effectively gives enterprise teams a sanctioned rollback path for production breakages, rather than leaving them to troubleshoot failed automations unaided.

Two paths, one decision

The guidance places administrators at a familiar fork. The immediate option is to re-enable EWS and stabilise the environment — a remediation step for sync jobs, mailbox tooling, and third-party integrations that silently stopped authenticating or returning data. The second, more durable option is to move each dependent workload to Microsoft Graph, the interface Microsoft has pointed administrators toward as the better-supported and more secure successor for Exchange-related functionality.

For most teams, the sensible sequence is both: re-enable EWS as a short-term stabiliser to stop the bleeding, then use the resulting visibility into which applications actually depend on the interface to drive a prioritised Graph migration plan. Re-enabling without an inventory simply resets the clock on an outage that will recur the next time the setting changes.

Guardrails before you flip the switch

Admins considering the re-enable route should treat it as a controlled exception rather than a permanent architecture decision. Practically, that means:

  • Scope the change. Confirm with your tenant's change-management process who owns the setting and who can reverse it, and record the change with an expiry or review date.
  • Inventory first, enable second. Before touching the toggle, identify every application, connector, and script that touches EWS — including vendor appliances and monitoring agents that may not appear in obvious documentation. Untracked dependencies are how retirements turn into incidents.
  • Verify after the change. Re-test authentication and data flows for each dependent app rather than assuming the re-enable resolved silent failures; partial outages often look like success from the admin console.
  • Watch for caveats. A re-enabled interface that has been retired may not receive the same level of support or parity as before, so treat any restored behaviour as provisional and validate it against Microsoft's current documentation.

The longer game: Graph migration

Microsoft's directional guidance has long favoured Graph, and this announcement does not change that. The pragmatic reading for administrators is that re-enablement buys time, not certainty. The durable fix is a per-interface migration plan: map each EWS dependency to its Graph equivalent, assign an owner and a target date, and track progress the way you would any other deprecation programme.

That discipline matters because API retirements rarely announce themselves in a change advisory — they surface as failed sync jobs, unanswered webhooks, or authentication errors in a system nobody has touched in months. Teams that maintain an up-to-date inventory of integration touchpoints, together with a successor-API plan for each, recover in hours instead of weeks.

For IT professionals running Microsoft 365 estates in mixed enterprise environments — including those managing hybrid deployments with on-premises Exchange components — the exposed integrations are typically the oldest and least documented: legacy mailbox migration scripts, archival tools, and line-of-business connectors built when EWS was the default choice. Those are the candidates worth auditing first.

Graph
