A malware campaign tracked by Check Point Research over roughly two months is using counterfeit GitHub projects that imitate popular AI tools to install a cryptocurrency miner — and its most deceptive trick is that the installer itself carries a valid vendor signature.

Security Affairs reported on the campaign, dubbed Yoba, which preys on demand for unofficial desktop clients for ChatGPT and Claude. Attackers set up lookalike repositories complete with fabricated stars, forks, and commit histories, luring developers and power users who search GitHub for an AI app wrapper before the official option turns up.

According to Check Point Research, the payload delivery chain is built around sideloading: the counterfeit project ships an installer that bundles a legitimate, correctly signed binary from OpenAI or Anthropic together with malicious loader logic. When the user runs it, the authentic binary executes as expected while the injected components quietly drop a custom malware chain that ultimately deploys a crypto miner.

The campaign's core lesson is a subtle one that has implications well beyond this particular sample: a valid signature answers "who signed this," not "is this safe." Security tooling, package managers, and experienced developers alike treat a validly signed binary as a trust anchor. Yoba exploits exactly that reflex by wrapping its loader around software whose signature genuinely does check out. Provenance — where a file came from and what was added to it — is a different question from authenticity, and only the first one is compromised here.

The miner itself is unsophisticated; Check Point's write-up positions the value of the campaign in its social-engineering and sideloading chain rather than in any novel payload technique. That is also why detection efforts focused solely on miner signatures would miss the more interesting part of the story: the distribution method.

For open-source developers, the trust signals typically used to vet a repository — star counts, fork counts, commit activity, and valid signatures — were present in this campaign and every one of them was misleading. None of those indicators independently establish that a repository's maintainers are who they claim to be, or that the artifacts they publish have not been tampered with. That distinction is broadly relevant to IT practitioners everywhere, particularly where software-provenance checks increasingly fall to individual engineers rather than central IT functions.

The AI branding, in other words, is interchangeable packaging rather than the point of the attack. The same sideloading recipe would work against any developer-tool category with demand for unofficial clients — a pattern seen repeatedly across trending software niches. Communities would be better served building verification habits around artifact provenance than around whichever brand gets impersonated next cycle.

Practical takeaways are consistent with standard supply-chain hygiene: prefer official distribution channels for AI desktop clients, treat GitHub popularity metrics as a weak signal at best, and treat signature validity as necessary but not sufficient when assessing an unfamiliar binary. Sideloading chains thrive where users install software from unofficial mirrors precisely because official options are hard to find or feel gated.

Security Affairs noted that Check Point Research disclosed the campaign after its two-month tracking period. The company did not disclose how many organizations or individuals were affected.
