A tampered build of Anthropic's official VS Code extension sat on Cursor's marketplace for roughly 12 hours before anyone pulled it, Ars Technica reports. How the attacker somehow gained access to what Ars Technica describes as "Anthropic's verified Cursor account" in the first place remains unknown.
What is confirmed — and what is not
Details so far are limited, and the gaps matter as much as the facts:
- Initial access. No credential-theft method, insider angle, or takeover technique has been established for the compromise of Anthropic's verified Cursor account.
- Distribution scope. Neither the number of affected users nor the regions they sit in have been stated. Because extensions update in the background, a tampered build can reach unattended machines silently — but the install base itself is unquantified in available reporting.
- Payload behaviour. What the backdoored build actually did — exfiltration, execution, credential harvesting, anything — has not been characterised.
The reporting supports the headline claims and little beyond them.
A badge is not a login
Cursor is a fork of VS Code, but it ships with its own marketplace, its own publisher accounts, and its own trust signals. That makes it a distinct supply-chain surface, not merely a skin over the extensions developers already know from the official VS Code marketplace.
The "verified" label — as Ars Technica's own summary frames it — is the pivot of the whole incident. The badge speaks to where a listing came from; it says nothing about whether the account behind that listing is still in the publisher's hands. This is the same failure mode npm and PyPI maintainers have spent years absorbing: the publisher's credentials are the supply chain, and once they go, the badge keeps glowing. The episode simply moves that lesson up a layer — into the editor, on the machine that writes and runs your code.
The 12-hour window cuts both ways. It is short enough to suggest something caught it — automated scanning, vendor reporting, or manual review plausibly surfaced the listing, though the detection path has not been stated. It is also long enough for auto-updates to land on developer workstations nobody was watching in real time.
Why it lands here too
Hong Kong's developer community runs on the same global toolchain as everyone else: extensions pulled from third-party marketplaces, refreshed in the background, trusted on the strength of a badge. As of this writing, no local response to the incident has been reported — the exposure Hong Kong developers face is the same one everyone else does.
Three things worth doing this week
- Inventory your extensions. List every VS Code and Cursor extension installed across your team, including ones that arrive by default through profiles or dotfile setups.
- Treat publisher accounts as production infrastructure. Long-lived tokens, unrotated keys, and missing second factors on a marketplace account carry the same risk class as an exposed production server.
- Confirm clean versions with the vendor. Available reporting has not pinned down a known-good version number for Anthropic's extension, so verify directly with Anthropic before rolling back or reinstalling rather than trusting a number from a secondary source.
We will update this article as reporting develops on the initial access vector, the affected install base, or what the tampered build did.
