Langflow Self-Hosted Instances Exposed to Unauthenticated RCE — Patch to 1.13.0 Now
Two critical flaws in the open-source AI workflow tool Langflow could allow a remote attacker with no account to bypass authentication or execute arbitrary code on a server, The Hacker News recently reported, citing an advisory IBM disclosed last week.
IBM is the channel through which Langflow vulnerability reports are handled. Every release from 1.0.0 through 1.12.8 carries both flaws, and version 1.13.0 is the only fix — meaning any self-hosted instance still running an older build is exposed to both issues simultaneously.
An Attack Surface That Needs No Credentials
For self-hosted deployments, the nature of these flaws is far more serious than a typical authentication defect: the precondition is not a leaked password, not a phishing kit, and not a misconfigured permission — it is the complete absence of an account. Both attack paths described in the advisory, authentication bypass and remote code execution (RCE), work without the attacker holding any credentials.
That shifts the remediation question from login hygiene to network position. If a Langflow instance is reachable directly from the public internet, the only meaningful interim control before the upgrade completes is to place it behind a VPN, an internal network, or an authenticated reverse-proxy layer. WAF rules or a "stronger password policy" will not reduce this risk.
Absent from CISA KEV: A Reprieve, Not a Guarantee
Neither flaw currently appears in CISA's Known Exploited Vulnerabilities (KEV) catalog. In practice, that means there are no confirmed cases of in-the-wild exploitation — but it should not be read as license to schedule the work for later.
Security practitioners' experience is that unauthenticated RCE in developer tooling is often weaponised within days of disclosure; once mass scanning begins, internet-exposed self-hosted instances are typically the first targets. Absence from KEV represents a time lag, not an absence of risk.
Self-Hosted Patching Checklist
- Inventory your instances. Identify the version number of every Langflow deployment, including development, test, and throwaway environments — forgotten legacy instances are usually the actual intrusion path.
- Upgrade to 1.13.0. All releases from 1.0.0 to 1.12.8 are affected and 1.13.0 is stated as the sole fix; if that holds, partial or rolling upgrades will resolve neither flaw.
- Restart and verify. Restart the service after upgrading and confirm the running version is genuinely 1.13.0, rather than trusting the package manager's report alone.
- Treat reverse-proxy authentication as containment, not remediation. It shrinks the attack surface, but the vulnerabilities themselves remain.
- Assume compromise prior to patching. If the instance was exposed to the public internet before the upgrade, rotate credentials, keys, and access tokens, and review logs.
Readers who need CVE identifiers, CVSS scores, and affected endpoints should consult IBM's full advisory and any subsequent coordinated disclosure for the formal risk rating.
The Bigger Picture
Langflow belongs to the category of AI orchestration tools that have proliferated over the past two years — tools that often prioritise developer convenience by binding services directly to reachable networks, and that ship updates quickly. The release of 1.13.0 shows the patch pipeline is working; for self-hosted users, the real test is keeping up with version status.
Teams across Hong Kong running self-hosted developer tools should treat this as a general reminder: patch scheduling for AI toolchain software deserves the same standing as traditional server patching, rather than waiting for the next maintenance window.
