Intel has posted a patch series adding SoundWire support to the upstream Intel AVS Linux driver for Raptor Lake, according to Phoronix, which framed the submissions as targeting Raptor Lake–powered automobiles.

The series covers the RPL-M and RPL-P variants of the Raptor Lake family and would bring the SoundWire audio bus interface into the mainline kernel's Intel audio driver rather than leaving it to out-of-tree or vendor-maintained code.

Two caveats matter here. First, the automotive framing is Phoronix's characterisation of the work, not something confirmed by an Intel press release. Second, posted patches begin a maintainer review process; they are not a guarantee of a merge. Whether the series lands as proposed will only become clear once subsystem maintainers have had their say.

What SoundWire is

SoundWire is a MIPI Alliance–standardised two-wire interface for connecting audio codecs and other audio peripherals to a host processor. It competes with older serial audio links such as I2S and SLIMbus, and is designed to carry audio data, control signalling and clocking over a single low-pin-count bus. Its standardisation under MIPI means the interface is not tied to one vendor's silicon, which matters when a board designer is specifying components years ahead of a product shipping.

Why upstream timing matters

The interesting part of this story is less the individual patches than the calendar. Intel is doing this work in 2026 for a Linux kernel that will ship in 2027 — and, if Phoronix's reading is right, for vehicle platforms that will not reach consumers until well after that. Automotive hardware has a long lead time: silicon, board design, infotainment stacks and certification all run ahead of production. Any driver support that is not in mainline by the time an automotive vendor builds its kernel tree has to be carried as a private fork.

That is the real incentive behind avoiding downstream divergence. Audio support has historically been one of the areas where vendor kernel trees drift furthest from mainline. A private SoundWire implementation has to be rebased onto every new kernel, audited separately, and maintained long after the vehicle is on the road — a vehicle lifecycle measured in a decade or more, against a mainline kernel that moves every nine weeks. Landing the code upstream instead means the fixes, refactors and new-hardware support flow both ways for the life of the product.

Each patch that makes it into mainline therefore narrows the gap between what Intel ships downstream and what the community can build on, and it signals that the upstream AVS driver is being treated as a serious target for embedded and automotive deployments rather than just desktop and laptop audio.

What to watch

The open question is straightforward: does the series survive review? If it does, the 2027 kernel cycle will carry Raptor Lake SoundWire support for anyone building on that silicon. If it needs rework, the automotive timeline — not the code itself — is what gets squeezed.
