Check Point Research has disclosed a jailbreak bundle for OpenAI's Codex coding agent that quietly rewrites the agent's trusted instructions to promote a third-party AI gateway — a technique the firm has named "prompt adware." The Hacker News reported the findings in November 2026.
The bundle, called Haiou (Chinese for "seagull"), alters Codex's configuration so the advertising sits inside the instruction layer the agent treats as authoritative, rather than in content pulled from a repository or a session prompt. Per Check Point's characterization, the modification is applied at the instruction and configuration layer rather than through a traditional executable.
The naming carries the point: "adware" has traditionally meant software that serves unwanted ads, but Haiou brings no installer. What persists is configuration that shapes every subsequent interaction the agent has.
A different shape from prompt injection
Unlike prompt-injection attacks, which smuggle instructions through untrusted input such as fetched web pages, issue comments, or documentation, this technique operates on configuration the agent already trusts. The malicious text is applied before the session begins and stays in place across tasks, so it does not depend on tricking the model mid-conversation.
That distinction is editorial, not observational: Check Point's disclosure describes the mechanism, not a catalogue of signals that endpoint tooling failed to catch. The practical implication is that review has to happen where the configuration lives, not only where prompts are assembled.
Importantly, this is a report on third-party tooling that manipulates agent configuration — not a vulnerability in OpenAI's platform. The implicated party is the authors of a "jailbreak toolkit" a developer would have chosen to download, not the Codex service itself.
Where the attack surface actually sits
The finding reframes the blast radius of AI coding assistants. Hardening the model is only one layer; every configuration file, plugin, hook, gateway reference, and shared starter prompt a developer adopts is part of the trusted stack as well. A toolkit that rewrites instructions functions as a supply-chain threat aimed at the workflow rather than the codebase.
The finding is broadly relevant to development teams adopting AI coding assistants — anyone pulling agent tooling from third-party sources is effectively extending the trust boundary of their development environment.
The response is less a checklist than a change in habit. Treat agent configuration as source code: diff changes to instruction and config files with the same scrutiny as a pull request, including files inside hidden or tool-managed directories. Prefer pinned versions from verifiable publishers, and inspect what a "productivity" or jailbreak bundle actually ships before installing it. If tampering is suspected, rebuild from a known-good baseline rather than patching in place — and constrain the agent's network and secrets access so a rewritten instruction set has a smaller blast radius.
