Amazon Web Services published its first Deep Learning AMIs (DLAMIs) built on Ubuntu Pro in September 2026, Canonical announced, starting with the Base GPU image family. For anyone running GPU workloads on EC2, the headline addition is Expanded Security Maintenance (ESM), which Canonical says extends overall security coverage from five years to ten on these images — a meaningful extension given how long a validated machine-learning stack tends to outlive its launch window.
DLAMIs are AWS-maintained machine images preloaded with GPU drivers, CUDA toolchains and common deep learning frameworks. That preloading is exactly why the patch tail matters. A DLAMI freezes a large dependency tree — CUDA, cuDNN, Python runtimes, framework builds — in a configuration validated by the cloud provider. Users who keep instances alive, or snapshot and respawn them across model training cycles, inherit an operating system whose OS-level security updates stop at the standard LTS boundary long before the ML stack is retired. ESM covers those OS packages in the gap, according to Canonical's announcement.
The announcement positions these as the first DLAMI line to carry Pro's extended coverage; it does not characterise what earlier DLAMI lines ran.
What ships in the image
Canonical's post is specific about the current build state: 31 DLAMI lines are actively built, split across Ubuntu releases — the Ubuntu 24.04-based Base GPU images ship kernel 7.0.0-1013-aws, while the 22.04 line runs 6.8.0-1064-aws. CUDA 13.2 is the default toolchain, and 38 packages already present in the base image are explicitly listed as covered by ESM. Operators querying the catalogue programmatically can resolve current image identifiers through SSM parameters rather than clicking through the console. The announcement also documents the support matrix for Grace Blackwell–based P6e-GB200 and GB300 instances, which is the reference point for teams sizing the next training cluster.
What the announcement does not say
Two questions that procurement teams tend to ask first are not answered in Canonical's post. The first is compliance: the announcement does not enumerate certifications such as FIPS, Common Criteria or CIS hardening profiles, so buyers with audit requirements should confirm against Canonical's Ubuntu Pro documentation and the marketplace listing what entitlements actually attach to these DLAMIs before assuming a compliant GPU base. The second is regional rollout — availability in ap-east-1 (Hong Kong), ap-southeast-1, ap-northeast-1 or any other APAC region is not addressed in Canonical's announcement, and should be verified in the AWS console or Marketplace before migration planning.
Pricing sits in the same category. Ubuntu Pro is not free, but neither the announcement nor its linked material publishes a per-hour uplift for these DLAMIs, and how the entitlement is metered — AWS Marketplace subscription, a pre-attached Canonical token, or an instance-level subscription — will determine renewal and cost-allocation workflows for fleet operators. Any per-hour figure should be treated as unconfirmed until it appears in the Marketplace listing or a Canonical price sheet.
When Pro is worth it vs. plain LTS
- Worth the uplift: long-lived inference endpoints, multi-year training clusters, images snapshotted and relaunched repeatedly, and workloads with audit requirements.
- Plain LTS is fine: short-lived disposable instances spun from current images, experiments torn down within the LTS window, and environments where your own tooling already owns patching.
What to watch
Coverage is narrow for now — only the Base GPU family is affected. The other DLAMI lines Canonical names in the announcement — framework images with PyTorch preinstalled, and Neuron images targeting AWS Trainium and Inferentia accelerators — are the natural next candidates to watch for Pro coverage, as is whether Pro becomes a selectable option across the catalogue rather than a fixed property of certain image lines.
For IT professionals across APAC, the practical relevance of this release is mostly lifecycle arithmetic rather than a new feature set: deep learning images are now getting the same long-horizon security maintenance story that enterprise Ubuntu servers have had for years. Whether that story reaches a given region, and at what price, remains the detail to confirm before committing a workload to it.
