A mitigation-selection fault means the status a machine reports may not be the protection it is actually running
x86 administrators auditing Branch History Injection (BHI) defenses should treat a host's reported mitigation status as unconfirmed until they can verify the fix is present on it. This week's batch of x86 corrections, sent out ahead of the Linux 7.4-rc2 release candidate, includes a fix for faulty selection of the BHI countermeasure, Phoronix reports.
The important part is what kind of defect this is. The patch changes which mitigation the kernel selects rather than adding a new one — so a machine can display a normal-looking protection status while running a different code path than the one an operator believes is in effect.
Why a selection bug is harder to spot than a missing patch
The distinction matters for anyone auditing their estate. A missing patch surfaces in a version comparison or a CVE inventory; a mitigation-selection bug does neither. Because nothing new is being introduced, unpatched hosts emit no outward signal: there is no fresh vulnerability identifier to search for, and no row in a standard vulnerability table that flags the affected machines. The status string written to sysfs can look entirely healthy on a host that is running the wrong path. In practice, output under /sys/devices/system/cpu/vulnerabilities/ is a statement of intent, not verification of runtime behaviour — a gap that affects anything reading it as evidence of what the machine is doing.
What the report establishes, and where it stops
Phoronix's report establishes the headline fact: a selection fault was corrected in the x86 pull. The affected mitigation paths and the CPU and configuration conditions under which the fault triggers are detailed in the upstream submission itself, not in secondhand write-ups. Anyone deciding whether a particular host is exposed should read that submission directly.
Remediation: a kernel update, not a configuration change
There is no kernel configuration or boot parameter to adjust. The corrected selection logic has to be present in the running kernel, which means taking a kernel update that carries the fix and rebooting. The verification that matters is the build, not the status string: confirm the running kernel includes the corrected selection logic — via the distribution's changelog or the referenced commit in the kernel tree — rather than trusting what sysfs reports.
The fix landed in the run-up to the 7.4-rc2 candidate. Whether a given production host runs it depends on when a kernel containing the commit reaches that host and is rebooted in, which is a separate question from the upstream merge.
Why it matters
Disclosure is not deployment. For teams that file a mitigation status as proof of a hardened posture — in internal review, in inventory records, or in tooling that scrapes the same sysfs files — a reassuring string that does not reflect runtime reality records a claim as if it were a fact. The durable lesson is to treat reported mitigations as claims to be verified rather than facts to be recorded.
