Chinese semiconductor startup Yunsilicon has begun posting patches to the Linux kernel mailing list (LKML), marking its first attempt to get networking hardware supported by the mainline Linux kernel, according to Phoronix.
Founded in 2021, Yunsilicon develops high-performance network adapters and data processing units (DPUs) — the smart-NIC-class accelerators that increasingly handle storage, security and virtualisation offload inside data-centre servers. Per Phoronix, the past month has been the company's first foray into kernel patch submission, with the aim of landing support for its networking silicon upstream.
Anyone assessing where the submission currently stands should check the LKML archives and the relevant subsystem trees directly, as review status on new-driver submissions can shift quickly between revision cycles. The vendor's "high performance" positioning should likewise be treated as a marketing claim pending third-party benchmarks.
Why a driver submission matters
For network engineers and systems administrators, a mainline driver is the practical difference between hardware that works out of the box with the distributions already running in production and hardware that depends on vendor-supplied out-of-tree modules. Out-of-tree drivers lag kernel releases, complicate security patching, and can break silently across upgrades — a maintenance liability in fleets where uptime and reproducible builds are non-negotiable.
For Hong Kong engineers sizing up new networking silicon, the same questions apply: multi-year support lifecycles and supply-chain continuity weigh as heavily as throughput figures. A new silicon contender seeking adoption in such environments generally needs a credible path to upstream support, not just competitive benchmark numbers.
A crowded field
Yunsilicon would be entering an established competitive landscape. NVIDIA (through its Mellanox acquisition) has long dominated high-performance NICs and DPUs with deep upstream kernel support. Intel, AMD (via Pensando) and Broadcom all ship adaptive and programmable networking silicon with varying degrees of mainline driver coverage. For a 2021-founded entrant, upstreaming early is arguably less about immediate market share and more about establishing legitimacy with the kernel community and the cloud and telco operators that follow its conventions.
Getting code merged into the kernel also signals interoperability commitment to buyers worldwide — a durable asset where hardware specs alone may not differentiate.
What to watch
Whether Yunsilicon's patches survive review is the open question. New network driver submissions routinely go through multiple revision cycles as maintainers scrutinise code quality, ABI stability and licensing. A first submission is a starting point rather than an acceptance.
For the open-source community, the story is a familiar one: another vendor discovering that mainline support is earned through sustained review participation, not announced at a launch event. Whether Yunsilicon commits to that long tail of maintenance — fixing regressions, rebasing across releases, responding to review feedback — will determine if its networking hardware becomes a routine option in Linux environments or a footnote.
According to Phoronix, the work is ongoing.
